Rolling Stone list of the best albums of 2010 - I have exactly one of them
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/30-best-albums-of-2010-20101213

I have #8 - "Band of Joy" by Robert Plant and personally I was not impressed by it. Go figure.

Your thoughts?

3. I have five of those. The Roots deserved to be way higher on the list.

12. "How I Got Over" is one of their best albums.
They really tore it up playing quite a few songs from it at the Rally To Restore Sanity.

5. wow, how disappointing
Kid Rock is on there, but not DEVO? DEVO, who not only released their first studio album in 20 years, but also released one of their best albums as well?

And Killing Joke's Absolute Dissent is a big miss as well.

I also only have one album from that list, The Black Keys.

11. That Devo album kicks major amounts of ass.
I want to see them live when they come around to LA in March.

6. Three of their top 30 are in my top 10.
Edited on Tue Dec-28-10 03:36 PM by SteppingRazor
I had Big Boi at no. 3, they've got him at 21. I had Jamey Johnson at no. 2, they had him at 5. And I have the Black Keys at no. 4, they've got'em at no. 2.

I actually ranked their no 1 album, Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, as the most overrated album of the year, so I guess I'm not surprised to see it top another list.

10. Like I said, I liked a few of the albums.
And there's a couple on there that just barely didn't make my top 10 -- Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem for example. But Rolling Stone's list does leave off some huge records. And a lot of the great albums of this year are pretty genre specific -- it was a great year for hip-hop and country, and a lot of people aren't necessarily into one or the other of those. It was, on the other hand, a pretty damn grim year for rock and pop, so I think a lot of people are disappointed in a lot of year-end lists, if only because mainstream audiences were sort of unplugged from a lot of the best albums this year.

14. My impression in the last several years
Is that songs are vended individually, practically by the note. The concept of an "album," that is, a grouping of songs that follows a common thread or theme, doesn't really exist anymore. Not that every album did that, but my favorite albums seemed to have songs that hung together, as either the artist or the producer had a reason for doing it that way. For example, Elton John's albums "Tumbleweed Connection" and "Madman Across the Water" are chronologically close together, but the songs on each album aren't interchangeable. That may have been by luck or design, or perhaps I'm just inured to the songs and their order on each album.

Ah well, I'm probably just old.

15. seems to have bit of everything - hip-hop, roots, and some
oldies but goodies- Neil Young, Mellencamp, Elton John with Leon Russell for heaven's sake with, Peter Wolf and Superchunk are on there, too. The omni-present Kings of Leon. (oh, ok, ennnhhh). I do like Spoon, the Roots and Arcade Fire are pretty impressive. And there are the usual bands from Brooklyn only hipsters have heard of. I actually Katy Perry is more interesting than Taylor Swift, but suum quique.

I'm surprised not to see anything by Lady Gaga on there, though -when did her latest CD come out? As far as other choices, I only tend to hear newer stuff on our local adult alt. type station, so I'm kind of out of the loop.

Here's the WYEP best of 2010 list- some of the same stuff like Arcade Fire, Big Boi and Black Keys on there, but also some more diverse stuff.

17. Elizabeth Cook's Welder is really, really good.
Top 5 for me..

My list (which has very little in common with RS)

1. Justin Townes Earle, Harlem River Blues. Great album, a combination of Americana and Memphis Blues.
2. Mavis Staples, You are not alone. A collaboration with Wilco's Jeffy Tweedy. Great, Gospel-infused Americana
3. Carolina Chocolate Drops, Genuine Negro Jig. Old-timey music at it's best.
4. Elizabeth Cook, Welder. Twangy, with a touch of singer-songwriter.
5. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, I learned the Hard Way. True soul music.
6. Moondoggies, Tidelands. Engaging, pop-flavored Americana
7. Delta Spirit, History from Below. Indie pop.
8. Phosphorescent, Here's to Taking it easy.
9. Joe Pug, The Messenger, great young singer-songwriter
10. Los Lobos, Tin Can Trust, one of their best.

18. I don't have any of them; I've only heard 3 in their entiriety
I didn't like the ones I heard, especially the Robert Plant. He's turned into an old guy musically. I've heard some songs on several of the albums and have heard of others, but there are a lot of which I'm totally unaware. I like what I've heard from Kings of Leon, one of the few newish bands that I like a lot. Also heard some good stuff from Peter Wolf and the National. In my opinion, Buddy Guy's album should be on that list; it's certainly the best I've heard this year.

19. Rolling Stone
hasn't had any musical validity since 1974. It's good for nothing but lining bird cages now.

20. I don't buy it for the music
They have some of the best hard-hitting political reporting around. And, the Elton John/Leon Russel album and especially the Arcade Fire album are both as good as anything I've ever owned.

21. I have actually heard of 10 of the 30 artists, although I doubt I have heard anything
from these albums - maybe a cut or 2 from Kings of Leon and My Chemical Romance. I am surprised to see Neil Young, Leon Russel/Elton John and Peter Wolf making an appearance...I had no idea Wolf was still alive.

I bought 2 CD's this year for myself-Mean Old Man by Jerry Lee Lewis, and About Them Shoes, by Hubert Sumlin. Both these artists are well over 70 and I think many here have never heard of them.

I am interested in hearing some of this music just to see what it is about. Some might actually be worth while.

22. I'll go you one better.
Not only do I not own any of those albums, I haven't knowingly heard any songs off of any of them. Nor do I own any albums or songs by any of those artists.

24. Kanye West, the Roots and Robyn were all very good.....
But the totality of the list is an indication of the crapper that popular music finds itself in. America is collapsing economically, intellectually, politically and creatively.
