2. A friend and I were in the Redwoods
last summer and I played this song for her on guitar and then later, the full LP version by campfire...
She kept saying "is this the end?"
No I replied, three more crescendo's to go at least!
She, being 27, had never heard such hippy progressive drivel...

4. My guess is that the song was written while Yes was all hopped up on goofballs.
I mean, the evidence is in the grooves, you know?

:rofl:

6. I always thought it was "Mallards", not "Mountains"....watch out 4 the brown acid, dude....
Edited on Thu Dec-30-10 08:32 AM by old mark
Well, I see it IS "Mountains"...after all these years maybe I should have not had those 4 caps of brown acid at the same time, washed down with beer...

I wonder how many other lyrics I got wrong over the last 50 years or so...

14. yeah, but they were trying to say nothing.
It was a spoof on reports that the FBI was trying to find hidden meanings in their songs.

I think Yes really thought they were saying something. Like Rush with that goofy-ass Ayn Rand "Tree" song.

11. OK. OK. Look. Nothing but nothing then made sense to a lot of us.
We got to a certain age and it was all, like, "WTF? This doesn't make any sense. Maybe it will make some sense if I smoke me some weed. Well, no, it still doesn't make any sense. Maybe it will make some sense if I drop me some acid. Well, no, it still doesn't make any sense. How about if I smoke me some weed and listen to electrified music with strange lyrics? Nope. Well, how about if I drop me some acid and smoke me some weed and listen to electrified music with strange lyrics? Hmmm. Not working ..."

Some of my favorite music from that era captured that

12.  Some "Yes" trivia for those who watched the OP's clip.
LOL - Some of these facts will make some of you hate Yes even worse. :P

The guy playing keyboards also played on Space Oddity by David Bowie and Morning Has Broken by Cat Stephens.
The guy on guitar also played for Asia (Heat of the Moment, Only Time Will Tell, etc.)
The lead singer is Jon from Jon & Vangelis.
And I'm pretty sure the drummer in that clip is the guy who drummed on Instant Karma by John Lennon. (If not, then it's the guy from King Crimson)

15. Names...
The guy playing keyboards: Rick akeman
The guy on guitar: Steve Howe
The lead singer is Jon Anderson
And I'm pretty sure the drummer in that clip: is Alan White, according to comments. Bill Bruford on the LP.

Not mentioned in your post, but never to be forgotten, the amazing Chris Squire on Rickenbacker Bass.

16. Steve Howe (guitar) and Rick Wakeman (keyboards) ALSO played on...
...Lou Reed's first post-Velvet Underground solo album, which received such a terrible reaction from critics and sold so poorly that many felt a solo career was a bad move for Lou.

:rofl:

* Lou Reed - guitar, arranger, keyboards, vocals, producer
* Clem Cattini - percussion
* Helene Francois - harmony vocals
* Kay Garner - harmony vocals
* Steve Howe - guitar
* Les Hurdle - bass
* Paul Keogh - guitar, acoustic guitar
* Brian Odgers - bass
* Caleb Quaye - guitar, acoustic guitar, piano
* Rick Wakeman - piano, keyboards
* Tom Adams - cover art

22. Yes, also Caleb Quaye on guitar...
...an early Elton John sideman.

Quite a distance between "Sister Ray" and "Your Song." That was half the initial critical reaction, and probably came before the guys writing the reviews even dropped the needle into the first groove..."Why are THESE guys playing with LOU?"

Then again, the songs were primarily leftovers from the Velvets, and Lou essentially phoned in his participation because he was still pissed off about the Velvets and life in general, so the album really had no hope of becoming a "classic." That would take the intervention of a guy named David Jones on the next album.

19. Yes is still good in my book
I don't care how bad the lyrics are.

I saw them live after they had aged and they sounded so good. No lip sync, they took requests.

It's the best music to drive the highways on.

23. "...the best music to drive the highways on..."
I clearly remember one hot, clear summer day on Highway 1, driving from San Gregorio to Half Moon Bay. The sky was blue, not a cloud in the sky. I had the windows down and my Yes mix CD in the car, and had "South Side Of The Sky" blasting out the open windows.

It is, indeed, among the best music to drive the highways on.
