Poll question: Paranoid or astute? |
|
I just saw a news teaser "How to tell if your leftovers are safe to eat." My first thought was that a major food company had done research showing that since more people are living on severely reduced incomes, they are making better use of their food, eating more leftovers and doing less grocery shopping. So they planted a news story about the dangers of eating leftovers hoping to create fear in our germaphobic society and bring food-wasting back up to pre-economic-crisis levels and encourage more shopping.
Paranoid or astute?

The way I tell is this: sniff 'em if they don't make me gag, they're probably okay.
If I get sick after, then bonus - free diet day :bounce:

My husband said I was paranoid. But I think I convinced him he was being naive.

5. The Freezer is my friend! |

If I don't finish it, I freeze it. Depending on what it is of course. I mean, frozen cottage cheese is just not right!

6. That is paranoia and dangerous. There are countless other sources |
|
worldwide that warn of risks of improperly stored leftovers. Don't rely on one article. Google 'leftover food safety/ heath risks/ storage. A lot of people think concern about food pathogens is a joke. It's not. Care must be taken.
What you ought to be concerned about is that people have a skewered view about food pathogens because overly processed food lasts so long. People would save massive medical bills if they tossed out foods that don't keep well.

7. Bah--got a foolproof method |
|
Put a little bit of leftovers on paper plate. Put paper plate on floor. If cat tries to cover it up instead of eat it, it's no longer good. Easy peasy.

8. What happens if you have a psychotically finicky cat? |
|
My Evie has (unsuccessfully) tried to bury fresh salmon in the kitchen. Meanwhile, she'll lick the ashtray (pot, not tobacco). :P

9. Ooh, that's not finicky, that's unbalanced |

What kitteh in his/her right mind wouldn't want fresh fishies? I recommend psychoanalysis. Or at least a Cat Whisperer. Pot...well, now, that makes more sense...

10. She's the one with the freakish sweet tooth |
|
To be fair, her brothers and cousins (the other four cats) seem to get by fine with the occasional fresh salmon and no pot ashes.

13. Neither. It's a usual seasonal message, based on two factors. |
|
A. This period of time is the slowest media time of the year. If you want to get something published, now is the easiest time for the most exposure. Everybody and everything is off for 2 weeks. B. At this time of year, many people put out a ton of food, for family, guest, and who knows who else, and much of it is not eaten. But saved. Some of it for far too long. And some people get very sick. So it's an ordinary PSA at a slow story time. dc
