Cliche Movie Dialouge
Edited on Thu Dec-30-10 01:33 PM by Yavin4
From screenwriterguy:

“Is that all you got?” / “Is that the best you can do?”

“Yeah. A little TOO quiet.”

“Don’t you die on me!”

“Now… where were we?”

“What part of _____________ don’t you understand?”

The “I’m not leaving you!”-“You have to go on without me!” exchange

http://www.screenwriterguy.com/2006/11/25/screenwriterguys-top-10-worst-cliche-lines-of-dialogue/

Here are some of mine:

"Why me?" "Because you're the best there is."

"What are you going to do now?" "I'm going to finish what I started."

-- or --

"What are you going to do now?" "What I should have done a long time ago."

1. Not a movie cliche...
.
.
.
.
.
...but in a science fiction novel (I THINK by Spider Robinson)
that had time travel as one of its themes.
.
.
.
It OPENED with "And they all lived happily ever after" and
CLOSED with "It was a dark and stormy night".
.
.
.
Brilliant.

3. My 9-year-old niece
was learning about cliches in writing recently, including the "dark and stormy night" one.

She commented that SOMEONE had to be the first to write that line, and "it wasn't a cliche then, so it must really hurt his feelings that everyone laughs at it now."

26. The Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest

Lyttony of Grand Prize Winners

The camel died quite suddenly on the second day, and Selena fretted sulkily and, buffing her already impeccable nails--not for the first time since the journey began--pondered snidely if this would dissolve into a vignette of minor inconveniences like all the other holidays spent with Basil.

13. "I'm not a cop tonight" or "This time it's personal"
"Head 'em off at the pass," which hasn't enjoyed much play since Harvey Korman shot Slim Pickens in the foot for saying it in Blazing Saddles.

And, not so much a dialogue cliché, but the horror movie cliché of the person heading off by himself while the monster is busy picking off members of his party one by one. I also really dislike tight focus shots of a character where something suddenly attacks to scare the pee-doodle out of the audience. You think if you were really worried about something attacking you, you'd be focused on your belly button? No, you'd be looking around, trying to see everything around you all at once. It's a cheap-ass trick done by unimaginative directors.

Would you do everything someone says, why not do the other stuff also.

And no problems with that, but that creates a contradiction of pick and choose if that is a reasoning.

Yea I understand that, been on both sides of

The “I’m not leaving you!”-“You have to go on without me!” exchange

It is the concept of being able to accept help from other people, most of that is a pride issue. Although it can also be a selflessness issue, but it misses on balance, but is different based on the situation.

And underline is the subway. Not sure how you figured that out.

It is not intelligence operation, but there could be some or even many in intelligence involved.

Much of it is supernatural, both good and bad.

27. "Either they're going down...or we are"
Seen most recently in Star Trek. I get that it's supposed to inspire but when you think about it, it's just plain stupid. ("Either we're going to destroy their gargantuan ship that is superior to ours in every way--and especially in terms of sheer destructive potential--or we're all going to die!") Are those the only choices?

30. Any number of movies.."What do you think of this one?"...
an artist says to the object of his/her lust as they are standing in front of a large piece of Modern Art.

"I'm not sure how to expresses it, but I know what I like and I like/hate this." Choice is depending on if it's
his/her companion's art or a competitors or if they want to get laid.

Yawn...Predictible.
