What was the greatest era of Rock music?
I would say it is the period from the British Invasion to the emergence of Heavy Metal in the early 70s. The Age of Alternative Rock from the mid 80s to the mid 90s is a close second.

1. hmmm, although you could make an argument for the
early Rock and Roll, rhythm and blues- type era with Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Chubby Checker, etc. - that was a pretty important one too. And then the mid-late 70s punk era is dear to my heart.

2. 1966-1974.
A little smaller window than your choice. In 1966: the Beatles did Revolver; the Yardbirds started pushing the envelope in a way they called "progressive"; psychedelic music was beginning to take hold in San Francisco; a dude named Hendrix was blowing away London audiences. Rock achieved real greatness and maintained it until 1974, when urban music like Earth, Wind and Fire and Parliament kinda changed the rules and rock took to the arenas.

I'd also take the early 90's over any part of the 80's, myself.

7. The late 80s were good because of the Alt. Rock, the early 80s sucked.
I like the early Punks like the Ramones and the Dead Kennedys, and a few metal bands, but in general I don't like the music of the late 70s and early 80s.

5. Right now...
There are more bands out there at kick serious ass than at any time in history. The jam scene, the New Orleans scene ahs a number of charismatic stars and the music is incredible. On NYE there were 20 killer choice isn SF whereas in years before there might be a couple of options. Primus, FURTHUR, and a ton of others.

The music is way more accessible too with festivals being the way to see the music instead of one or two act bill in an arena..
