I'm all alone for the evening, and could use a little conversation...

14. Nah, just steppin' back.
Rough week in clinic.

I'm starting to understand why doctors and other medical providers (Physician Assistants like me) are such hard-partiers. Anything to jettison the stress...

What porter are you drinking? Sierra Nevada pale ale for me; I haven't had anything dark for a long time...

15. I'm gonna try. My wife will be home later this evening. I'm just a little buzzed.
If she was out of town or something, I'd really be getting plowed...

Ugh. Twice this week, a couple of patients thought they could shake me down for narcotics. I told them 'ain't hap'nin.' They weren't happy...

16. Never thought about that aspect of your job.
Probably happens a lot in the ER.

17. Oh, yeah. A LOT!
Just yesterday, I got a new patient in to establish care after following-up on an ER visit for an anxiety attack. The ER report carried a diagnosis of drug-seeking behavior.

Sure enough, he insisted that benzodiazepines were the only medications that eased his anxiety symptoms.

My clinic doesn't prescribe benzoes because of the potential for addiction and dependence.

I refilled his non-benzo medications and sent him away. Later in the day, I got a call from the local ER stating that he had shown up demanding the benzoes I had refused to prescribe for him. The kid was stupid enough to mention my name as his primary care provider. They called me, and I told them straight up he was drug-seeking.

If he shows up at my clinic again, I'll probably dismiss him from the practice.

:grr: And there are so many people who need genuine help that I could be seeing instead...

19. I had an Aussie friend visit several times
He tried the popular brand-name American beers and pronounced them all "baby piss."

The only beer he liked over here was Sam Adams.
