Some of you might remember this thread in which I complained about Sears' attempts to rip me off on a snowblower repair:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x9575953 Well, let me tell you what happened after that.
I took the pull starter to a local shop and said: "I need a new one of these." The guy behind the counter told me he could get one in a couple days, for about $80.
But then the asked: "Why don't we try to fix the old one instead?"
I said: "You can do that?"
The guy said: "Maybe. Leave it here and check back in two hours." He explained that while the thing was designed to be unrepairable, they had a tool in the back that could get it apart. It was worth a try and he said he would not charge me if he could not fix it.
Two hours later, the starter was fixed. The snowblower is running. Total cost: Just under $26.
Cool. That local shop now has my devotion. I will buy my next yard machine there. My lawn mower is getting old. So, I could be returning pretty soon.
:)
Edited to add the Web site of the local shop:
