My mom died yesterday
Even though she was 92, had dementia/Alzheimer's and had been living in a nursing home for 4 years and assisted living before that, for the first hour or two after she passed I felt so vulnerable. I felt like a lost child. It was a very strange and almost frightening feeling. I spent the rest of the day just being sad and useless.

As long as you have a parent you are still a child in the some sense. Safe passage Polly.

Of course you're still a child. We all always are, I think.

Ah, you must be hurting.

Hugs, sweetie. My heart goes out to you.

2. Mothers certainly are special,
and you are right, no matter how old we find friendship, love, and comfort in our mothers.

RIP Polly!

“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”

Quote by Washington Irving

14. She was an amazing woman
Child of the depression, WWII staff sargeant, mother of seven, foster mother of many disabled children, artist, bread baker, Nanny, world traveller, voracious reader, teacher of English as a second language to international college students, intrepid scrabble player, and spiritual leader of many.

She is missed. Thanks, yankeepants

22. Regardless of when you lose a parent, you still lose a parent!
My father passed away last September at the age of 95. He'd been in a nursing facility for about a year.

There were some people in my life who seemed to think that I was prepared for it, expecting it, and that I wasn't going to grieve his loss. Luckily, there were other friends who understood and allowed me the time I needed to heal.

While I revelled in the fact that he'd had a long and full life, and was grateful that we had him in our lives as long as we did - - - I still lost my father. It still hurt, it was still a grieving process, and there was still an empty chair at the Thanksgiving table.

So, my sympathies to you. I wish you peace and comfort. Take the time you need to grieve and heal, and to miss your mom. What you are feeling is a perfectly natural reaction. Don't try to minimize your loss based on your mom's age or condition. She was your mom, after all.

had that same vulnerability you are talking about. I was in my 30s yet still kept thinking, "But I'm not ready to not to have a mom!" Just the thought made me crumple up in tears.

I hope you can find some peace. For me, walking outside really helped. I always felt like she was in the sunset and the breeze. I feel much closer to her there than anywhere else.

Losing my father was rough because it was sudden -- a bolt out of the blue plus my Mom and I had each other for comfort. Losing my Mom was rougher because as you said, it means you're no longer a child. But after a long bout with cancer it was almost a relief in some sense.

Condolences.

I lost my dad a few years back, and yes, the world does seem a little smaller and colder when a parent dies.

Try to remember that as long as you breathe, a part of her is still here.

It will always hurt, but eventually the good memories will prevail.
