I hate being treated like a child....
A co-worker said this to me today because our boss could possibly come in and yell at him. He 'fucking hates being yelled at. I don't like being treated like a child.'

This coming from the guy who has worked with us for 5 days. Yesterday he was no-call/no-show. His excuse was that he did not know the schedule had changed. This despite the fact that I spoke with him about it and explained why it was changed. Before I left from work Sunday morning I told him that I would see him Tuesday and that he needed to use the weekend to study his menu.

This despite the fact that he claims he did not know the schedule changed but did not show up on Sunday, the day he was originally scheduled.

And then people wonder why I bang my head on the door.

1. I hate to say it, but
if you don't want to be treated like a child, then don't act like one. It is the employee's responsibility to know his schedule. I especially hate it when new people behave this way.

8. aw I do, Will
it's just that - well, I long for the days when regular shit at work made me angry and frustrated - now, it is just unbelievable. For example, I would say you have it lucky simply because you can understand what your nitwit "coworker" is saying :(

6. Sounds like you work in a restaurant?
Edited on Fri Jan-14-11 12:37 AM by Kat45
My boyfriend is a chef/kitchen manager and this sounds like the kind of shit he tells me about. His boss is a major yeller and they constantly fuck with people's schedules. I don't know how he can stand to work in a place like that. (He's also only been getting one day off a week for quite some time, and he works around 60-70 hours a week as is.) And yup, they get their no call/no shows; I don't get how people are so irresponsible.

7. We do In-Room Dining (Room Service) for a hotel....
There's generally 2 people for 1st, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd (except on the weekends when there are 2 people scheduled). Now due to this he's lost 2 days of training he obviously needs and I don't know how he will catch up before I go for my oral surgery.

9. It always surprised me when people don't get fired after a no call/no show.
Edited on Fri Jan-14-11 05:31 PM by Kat45
I've had more than one job where I didn't pick up enough of it to their liking within a month and I was fired. I'm now terrified that if I'm not perfect at a new job from the outset I'll get fired. Then I see people getting away with not even calling--and they're still employed. (I'm not.)

12. there was an article recently about having to train newer
workers on the value of "soft skills" I think they called them, such as showing up for work! and not arguing with co-workers and bosses!

I was a waitress in college at a number of places- tough job. I admire people who can work in the food service industry. God bless em. My neighbor works at a local hotel and he was just telling me about feeding the Steelers before the big game today!

11. Suspended for a day...
He SHOULD have been fired, no doubt in my mind. However he's 'needed' because I will be gone for an extended leave and they need someone to fill the position.

15. I hear ya, Will.
I do scheduling for a staff of 44. It amazes me sometimes, really. There's one part-time guy who is continually late, calls in a lot and complained to our VP because I cut half of his hours for one week as disciplinary action. And he is in a hire-classification that means I only have to schedule him from one to nineteen hours a week to be legal. :eyes:

16. Both the co-worker and the boss are wrong
There are no excuses for either of their actions. Knowing the schedule is your personal responsibility as a worker.

There is no excuse for a boss to yell at their employees. It is a sign that your boss doesn't know how to effectively supervise their workers. Anyone who can't handle their employees without yelling has no place in a management position.

17. I agree with most all of that.
I've had employees though that only responded to being yelled at. Sometimes being a great manager is about recognizing the best approach.

It was the last course of action, usually after I even sought permission from the district office to terminate and was denied; it achieved one of two outcomes: they improved or they quit because they disliked being yelled at. I generally didn't care which one occurred.

I had one guy who I went so far as to cut his hours to 2/week and make responsible for cleaning the grease-trap...and he thanked me. That guy I just wanted to leave...he claimed it was against his religion to bathe and we served food. Two profanity-laden tirades later, he decided he'd be happier at GameStop because the manager there didn't care if he smoked pot behind the dumpster during work hours. Totally a win/win way to get rid of the regional VP's nephew.

18. I guess for a spoiled nepotism hire I can see how it might be different
There are few things worse than trying to deal with spoiled brats who think they can't be fired. Fortunately for me I've never had the misfortune of dealing with one.
