I swear, I'm cursed
I had to take my new cat into the vet this morning. For the past few days, she hasn't been eating a lot and wasn't as playful as she was. I only got a month ago, adopting her and a dog from the local humane society.

Turns out, she has FIP, a very bad disease that's fatal and fatal quickly. Funny, two days ago the only thing that I knew of with that acronym was a wrestling company based in Florida.

She's going to spend a couple of more days with us, and then she's going to go meet her brothers in heaven.

What really gets me is that she'll be the third pet in a year that's passed away, something the vet remarked on today as us having a really rough year. Earlier in the year, we lost our dog of 14 years to cancer, which also came on suddenly. Then, in August, we lost our original cat to both FIV and feline leukemia.

I'm going to have to go to the humane society later and let them know about it, so they're warned about the others in her cage and let their adopters know if they were adopted out.

1. I'm so sorry!
Edited on Thu Jan-13-11 05:00 PM by hamsterjill
I'm so sorry that this has happened. Please love her for her remaining time (I know you will!), and thank you for trying to save one from the local HS.

I'm sure you've educated yourself on the disease, and know that FIP in and of itself is not contagious. It is a mutation of the corona virus. That said, it is appropriate to do as you indicate and notify others just to be safe.

I keep hoping that FIP research is going to make some headway.

As to being "cursed", I believe that they find those people who they are supposed to find...if you know what I mean.

I wish you peace and comfort, and again, I'm very sorry!

2. Thanks
I appreciate the sympathy. I've spent some time with her today, as have the rest of my family. Right now, she's sleeping on the couch like she normally does. We're thinking about taking her to the vet on Saturday.

If you mean "educated" as in reading the wikipedia article, then yes. I can't believe that we're only going to have her for a month. That month, though, has been wonderful.

5. Dr. Addie's site
You might wish to take a look at this site: http://www.dr-addie.com/WhatIsFIP.htm

Dr. Addie is a leading researcher on FIP. There are certainly many other sites, as well. This one is very informative.

I've been involved in cat rescue for many years, and FIP remains the absolute worst diagnosis that we see. It's very frustrating because there is no real, definitive test. I've personally had two cats that were suspected of having FIP that turned out to have something else. Your vet, will obviously, be your best resource.

Again - I'm so sorry.

4. Oh, my
I am so sad for ya. I had a cat diagnosed with FIP way back in the 80's - don't know if it was ever a correct diagnosis, though. I'd had her only a month or so, too, and got her from the local shelter in Fresno. I was a struggling nursing student then, and couldn't afford much treatment for the girl. I did the only thing I could do, and I force-fed her liquified canned cat food, which she hated, of course. She did survive, so I'm not sure that it WAS FIP, I understand that FIP is pretty much always a terminal diagnosis.

I feel for you. But I think these pets come into our lives, for reasons we never know sometimes, and we care for and love them and that, that Karma or whatever it is, goes on with us forever.

Hugs to you and your family, and of course the little girl.

6. Thanks for the support, everyone
We decided to move the time up to this evening, and I'm giving her all of the love that I can. I've taken a lot of pictures of her in the interim, and I can only hope that they'll come out right (we still use film).

We let the Humane Society know and they said that they'd keep an eye out, as well as notify the people who adopted Dixie's crate-mates (if any).

7. Well, it's over
We took her in to the vet about an hour ago, and spent a lot of time together with her. I broke down towards the end, and my mom had to go and get the doctor to take her (with my permission of course). As I said before in another thread, I can't watch them die. I just can't. We left the vet and then headed home.

Thanks for all of your support, everyone. I really appreciate it.

9. I'm so sorry for your loss...
I know it is so hard to lose a beloved pet, and you've had to do that way too often. Here's a virtual, but heartfelt

and wishes for your sorrow to ease soon.
