I just won the battle of AOL for a neighbor lady, the account is canceled.

A bill came today with a bill, my neighbor canceled the account a few years ago.

I told the company we would contact the credit card company, the account was quickly closed again.

AOL sent my neighbor a letter that scared her, and she called me.

AOL sucks.

1. AOL never really closes an account - if she accidentally logged into an old email account
She re-opened it as far as AOL is concerned. Warn her to NEVER return to any AOL email account she might have or this will come up again.

AOL is the scum of the earth. I was a member of Compuserve when they bought it and watched them destroy the old Compuserve forum system. I used to be a moderator on some forums there, but now I can't even get back into the system at all.

When I canceled my Compuserve account, AOL said they would put it on "hold" but I had been warned about their methods. Before I canceled, I changed the billing to a credit card that I was canceling anyway. Within a month of my closing my Compuserve account, that credit card number was invalid.

I got a letter from AOL about non-payment, but I sent them a nasty letter back threatening to contact the State Attorney's office for trying to collect from me after the account was canceled. I haven't heard a peep since.

2. My neighbor lady hadn't use the AOL account for years, she has a Yahoo account.
They sent her a non-payment letter also, scared the hell out of her.

I wasn't too nice on the phone, was on about 10 minutes.

Thanks for the info about AOL, I will pass it along.

A victory now and again feels good.

I bet they send out letters to a lot of people thinking some will pay.

5. Sounds like trying to close a McAfee account.
They keep your credit card number and automatically renew each year. Then the burden is on you to contact them and make them stop charging you for subscription renewals. Not much fun. And don't get me started on uninstalling their crap from a computer.

AOL is the same company that would
Flood your mail box with disks. One guy finally sued them, and stopped that stuff dead in its tracks. I have never used AOL, I have heard too many horror stories about how people tried to cancel their accounts, and how they were harassed by AOL aftewards.
