10. My 9/11 tale of woe: my tank full of heating oil fell over |
|
and over 200 gallons of it went glub, glub into the ground. My heating oil company promised to bring over another tank, but never did so I had to heat the house someway that winter and so I used electric space heaters and have ever since and they've kept me very cozy and comfy.

12. I remember now. You did say that about your oil tank. I hope it was |
|
nowhere near your well if you have one!
How is your electric bill thus far, and are you shutting your heaters off during the night? (We do when we use them. I had one catch fire when I was a kid. Nothing damaged other than the unit, but it was still scary.)

26. Electric bill is not too bad since electricity is regulated, but fuel oil moves with the market. |
|
Also, I am on the budget plan and am only paying $102 a month for electricity.
My heaters all have thermostats and so they are on all the time, but not running all the time. I'm not worried about fire, but I also have no worries about carbon monoxide. An upside is that with electric heaters all of the electricity is used to heat while my old fuel oil furnace might have been only 80% efficient.
I have city water, no well, but I did have to replace some topsoil and sod.

Jan 12 Was supposed to go down to 5 that night and it quit working about 8 PM Called the heat guys but they were backed up and couldn't get out until 7 or so the next morning Pilot light had gone out (gas shuts off automatically) They re-lit but it went out again the next day and they wouldn't re-lite it again Came in to replace the unit on Jan 15 and we are toasty again They had told us last summer that we were very close to needing a replacement Bad thing is now this new unit doesn't have the coils needed to cool the air like the old one did Come summer we are going to have to add that feature to get AC

It's all tolerable unless the car dies or the heater fails or the power goes off, eh?
Been there a few years ago. The best thing I did was buy a quilted down full-length coat and Triple A.
My grandparents homesteaded in Saskatchewan. Reading about that is a sure way to make me count my blessings.

I live in South Texas, so we don't see freezing temps more than 2 or 3 times per year. I seriously cannot imagine -22. I'm shivering just thinking about it.

17. Good news that it's fixed! |

:woohoo:
I'm testing a feat in survival here. NC Mountains aren't Maine or anything, but we have pretty cold winters lately. Get week spells where it isn't above 25-30 and single digits at night.
I am not even lighting the furnace!! lol
Since it is just me and the dogs here I am using an electric ceramic-type in my bedroom and cooking at night to heat kitchen area. I also placed an older type electric under the house in the event pipes freeze after day 2 or 3 in teens.
So far so good.. it isn't getting me much company, but I'm hoping to save about $500 over the winter.
:hi:

20. Many many years ago when I had some extra money |
|
i installed a corn burner and a wood burner just in case the furnace ever went out. We had had a gas interruption into town one night when it was -10. I never wanted that to happen again. We also have frequent power outages.

24. I hear that. We went without heat and power for ten days after the big ice storm of '98. If we'd |
|
just had a wood stove it would have made all the difference in the world.

21. One of our two furnaces went out a week and a half ago |
|
The furnace company went out of business and they are having trouble finding parts. The other furnace is designed to heat a much smaller home and the duct work was set up so that each furnace heated their own areas. It is about 75 in the warm areas and 58 in the cold areas. Since our bed room is in a cold area, we have a space heater to keep us warm enough for now. I'm just afraid that the other furnace will go out too.
