I've been thinking of getting one instead of using a car. Anyone here own one?

2. How often do you use your car in bad weather, when you have passengers or are carrying stuff?
A bike probably can't replace a car, but you can use it instead of one sometimes.

I took Trek's electric-assist bike out for a test ride and liked it a lot more than I expected to, but it wasn't within my budget.

If you have a reasonable commute than it might be a good option.

I'd stop by your friendly local bike shop and see if they allow test drives.

Eventually the battery died and couldn't find a replacement.

I gave it away to one of the maintenance workers on campus who had the time to find a battery that would work. I see him tooling around campus with it all the time.

Electric bikes are cool...

5. Have a two-stroke engine for a bike...
out in the shed that gets up to 200 miles on a gallon of oil/gas mix. Have not used it as yet and got it about 25 years ago.

It came as a freebie when I bought a small Japanese outboard(Aqua-Bug/Tanaka)and have been considering fitting it to a bike. Drive unit sits above the front wheel and the engine has a drive roller that drops down on the front wheel(a lever for that purpose).

Top speed is around 20 mph and you can pedal assist on hills. When I first got it, was in touch with a woman who used it on her bike to cross the country east to west. She was quite happy with it.

A polluting engine to be sure, but how much pollution at 200 mpg. May end up fitting it to a bike, maybe even a Huffy 3-wheeler with a large basket. No license required.

6. Those modified bikes need disk brakes.
Good brakes are inexpensive compared to a hospital ER.

7. I would recommend that you just use the regular pedal bike. It is

safer, offers no pollution.
The other solution I use is a full size, bonafide motorcycle. 60 mpg and will go anywhere, faster than the car.

Oh, and, the train, bus, subway, etc.

8. David...not a good answer for seniors...
who may not be able to pedal very far. Think handicapped. Motorcycles might not be the answer since none of us want 80 year old seniors riding one.

10. Well, I am not 80, but believe it or not I am a senior myself. And I
just hobbled out there and did 16 miles on my bicycle Sunday, and 4 1/2 miles Saturday on my tennis shoes.
And there were many seniors out there doing a lot more than me.
And you know what, exercise is the best medicine.

weight - very heavy and unwieldy.I certainly wouldnt want to push those uphills if the battery died. I think a gas or electric scooter might be better. But best of all is a regular bike.
