Israel signs land agreement with Palestinians - Hamas, Islamic Jihad leaders declare cooperation with new Palestinian government
New Palestinian Parliament will convene in 2 weeks
Kevin Foley, Reuters News Service
01 April 2004

JERUSALEM (Reuters)- In an unprecedented event since the 1947 declaration of the statehood of Israel, in increased pressure from elements in the left wing of Israel's Knesset, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon somberly announced the backing out of all Israeli troops, military equipment and settlers in the West Bank and Gaza on Thursday.

The agreement with the Palestinian Liberation Organisation will most likely result as 75 year-old Yassir Arafat as the first prime minister of the modern Palestinian state.

The specifics in the agreement which Israeli officials, with permission from foreign advisor Ehud Hessel, include the agreement that 1) Palestine will make the transition into a fully secular, democratic representative government, that 2) The prime minister will also be elected through democratic means, that 3) military Islamic terrorist groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad will completely cease from any and all terrorist activity, and 4) that Jerusalem must all go to Israel, and the capital must be in Ramallah. In exchange for this, Israel will construct a road from southwestern Palestine to the Gaza strip for free access to all Palestinians.

United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan said on Thursday that "The United Nations will immediately vote on soverignty for Palestine once more information is gathered".
