The Google e-mail thing has to be a joke
1GB storage limit? No deleting of messages? No folders, everything is searchable? The press release is dated Apr.1 I think it's a joke, but it's been picked up by AP, Reuters, NYTimes.. everyone!

3. While the timing is suspicious,
There are little indicators that it might be for real.

"In the future you will be able to access Gmail messages from non-Gmail accounts for free or at a nominal fee."

"Gmail does include relevant text ads that are similar to the ads appearing on the right side of Google search results pages. The matching of ads to content is a completely automated process performed by computers using the same technology that powers the Google AdSense program. This technology already places targeted ads on thousands of sites across the web by quickly analyzing the content of pages and determining which ads are most relevant to them. No humans read your email to target the ads, and no email content or other personally identifiable information is ever provided to advertisers."

I entered my email in the "want more info" box. If it's a hoax it's well done.

4. Wow
If thing is for real this would be an incredibly easy way to transfer large files to another person's google account.

6. not necessarily
1GB Web space sounds big, but doesn't exclude the possibility of a max attachment size. Text is very easy to compress and it is nearly impossible to fill a gig with text and small attachments.

Google's hiring for a job that's "out of this world."

http://www.google.com/jobs/lunar_job.html

" . . . by locating a research and technology center on the Moon, Google engineers will be able to experiment with an entirely different set of parameters. For example, imagine tapping unlimited solar energy to drive megawatt data centers and power innumerable arrays of massively parallel lava lamps, with ample no-cost cooling available to regulate the temperature of server farms sprawling over acres of land unblighted by sentient lifeforms or restrictive zoning ordinances.

"Moreover, Google's Copernicus Center will provide a clear ear on the chatter of the universe, the vast web of electromagnetic pulses that may contain signals from intelligent life forms in other galaxies, as well as a complete record of every radio or television signal broadcast from our own planet. Google's goal is to extract information from that cacophonous web and make it available to anyone with a mouse and a modem. Imagine discovering not only alien attempts at communication with Earth, but also such heretofore unavailable cultural treasures as Pink Floyd's 1968 appearance on the BBC and the tragically lost first season of 'Iron Chefs.'"

7. A correction
"...tragically lost first season of 'Iron Chefs.'" First, it should by "Chef", but these episodes have not been on FoodTV because they are a half-hour in length. FujiTV has them, I think.
