Is it better to be feared or respected?
Personally I'm going with feared. You can always lose someone's respect. It isn't generally easy to have them stop being afraid of you.

8. Baaaaad boy....
Baaaaad.

A ventirloquist cowboy walked into town and saw a rancher sitting on his porch with his dog.

Cowboy: Hey, cool dog. Mind if I speak to him?

Rancher: This dog don't talk!

Cowboy: Hey dog, how's it going?

Dog: I'm Doing alright

Rancher: (Extreme look of shock)

Cowboy: Is this your owner? (pointing at rancher)

Dog: Yep.

Cowboy: How's he treat you?

Dog: Real good. He walks me twice a day, feeds me great food, and takes me to the
lake once a week to play.

Rancher: (Look of disbelief)

Cowboy: Mind if I talk to your horse?

Rancher: Horses don't talk!

Cowboy: Hey horse, how's it going?

Horse: Not bad.

Rancher: (An even wilder look of shock)

Cowboy: Is this your owner? (pointing at rancher)

Horse: Yep.

Cowboy: How's he treat you?

Horse: Pretty good, thanks for asking. He rides me regularly, brushes me down
often, and keeps me in the barn to protect me from the elements.

Rancher: (total look of amazement)

Cowboy: Mind if I talk to your SHEEP?

Rancher: (gesticulating wildly, and hardly able to talk)...... Them sheep ain't nothin but liars!

11. It's tough to respect people you fear though.
Outside of you, I can't think of anyone that does both to me. ;)

12. i have never had the desire to be feared, that is about control. respect, given. spank, teach
is it better to spank your child or to teach your child why it behooves him to make good choices.

that is basically what you are saying. your choice would be to parent thru fear. and it is least effective, a very lazy way of parenting. not to mention a lazy way to walk thru life and not effective.

15. Actually I'm just kidding...
We were trying to get the dogs outside and Paul couldn't get them to go (I think they were laughing at the squeaky voice). I yelled and they ran out the door. I told him it's because they fear me and neither respect or fear him.

If people are afraid of you, they will do the minimum they have to do to avoid your wrath, with resentment, and only until they can escape. If people respect you, they will follow you on a journey of growth and productivity and help you to improve your own environment.

Edit: typo

22. I don't think they are mutually incompatible.
I can respect someone and still fear their ability to influence my fortune. A truer comparison would be fear vs. love. See Machiavelli.

23. Respected is far better
Scared people are wayyy too erratic for my taste - and they have no qualms about playing the victim card.
