Settle a debate in the Sand house: Correct pronunciation of Audi
I say it is Ow-dee (Like how-dee without the h).

Kevsand says Ah-dee (like ha-dee without the h).

What says the lounge?

Oh--and would you ever buy one for a couple thousand as a beater car?

1. I'm an auto racing geek.
So it's pronounced Pore-sha!

Ow-dee. I do believe.

5. For a couple grand I doubt we'll be racing too much.
But I appreciate that the Porsche fans are a dedicated group. :hi:

Me myself, I'm more of an American Muscle fan, and lord knows you don't get THAT in a beater!

Thanks for your input!

6. Well, at least you didn't say doo-dee...
Could have been worse...

I'm one of those folks that came up in a family that bought only AMERICAN cars. Literally, I can still hear my dad's voice, "what if you are in Jesus-Lost-His-Shoes noplace and that furrin car breaks down? You willin' to wait around while they ship the parts in on a bananna boat?" Dad was a midwest farmer who did his own mechanic work on cars, trucks, and tractors when the need hit. He swore by green farm equipment and American made cars, and he went to his grave with John Deere in the machine shed and a Buick in his garage.

This is a real departure for me to look at anything made outside the US, but it sounds like it might be a decent car that will hold up for a coupel of years. My last beater was a Ford Escort that I drove for four years until my mechanic told me it had "fully depreciated." I'll admit it looked kinda disreputable, but I loved that car. If I get half that out ofthis one I'll be happy.

7. Just call it Auto Union...
A very old marque that goes back to the beginning of cars and very big in the racing world for many years. Racing colors were silver.

OwDee.

9. OW-dee...formerly Auto Union when the Nazis were running it...
Edited on Sat Jan-29-11 05:40 PM by old mark
Here are some pics and information on the Auto Union Type D GP racers from 1938 and '39...

Based on experience, repairs can be expensive and parts and service on older Audis can be very hard to find...Mom had an older one that was NEVER successfully repaired over 2 years of attempts.
German cars do not live up to their great reputation.

10. Ow-dee.
"Au" in German is pronounced "ow" not "aw."

11. I've got a 13 year old OW-dee that I have just adored.
I'm about to give it to my son, who's lusted after it for, oh, 13 years now. It kinda has to be treated well but it serves well and is a blast to drive.
