Latest Surgery
Edited on Sun Jan-30-11 06:06 AM by Lasher
In September I lost an argument with my riding mower. After 10 days in the hospital they removed the big toe on my right foot due to infection.

This Friday’s 3 hour operation was performed by a bone surgeon who specializes in podiatry. She recommended this after a review of my January 17th x-rays caused her to suspect that infection had developed.

She found still-green grass clippings that had been left in my wounds after the 3 operations performed in September by my initial surgeon. She also found clear indications that serious infection is present. Now I know why recovery has eluded me.

Right now I’m taking oral antibiotics. I will see her on Tuesday, when I think she will prescribe installation of a PICC line for prolonged IV antibiotic treatment at home.

To be kind, I am disappointed in my initial surgeon. I don't think it's usually a good thing to have grass clippings sewn up inside your foot. But I'm convinced I am finally in good hands.

Still kicking,

Lasher

1. Dammit, Lasher
I am so sorry to hear of this. "Disappointment" is a mild word, and you are a kind human being for using it.

I'm sending you my best vibes for speedy recovery. Hoping the home IV isn't too inconvenient.

(I had an infection after ankle surgery, but I didn't have to have anything amputated. Mrs. V. saved my foot.)

3. Thanks, Bertha
The home IV will be a whole lot more convenient than staying in the hospital for 10 days like I had to do in September. Lots of family coming to see me today. I am being well treated.

4. Should be all downhill from here, Winky.
Getting lots of TLC from my family. I'm a lucky guy.

5. My dear Lasher!
Oh my God. Three surgeries, and there were still grass clippings?

That is so wrong, I have no words for it.

I'm really glad you have a new doctor, and I know you're ready, more than ready, for some true healing.

Take care, and keep kicking!

7. Thanks Peggy.
I've been thinking about how lucky I am to have good health insurance. I wish everybody did.

6. That is disappointing
Grass clippings? Your first surgeon couldn't see green grass clippings? Implantable prosthetics are colored green so they can be identified in case of injury. You ARE being kind. Hope you get a good/nice home-health nurse.
