Oh, my gosh! Recipe for explosive rolls!

I just saw this on Good Morning America. Southern Living Magazine has a recipe this month that has injured five people.

They showed how this happens, and it was awful. The recipe calls for putting water and shortening in a saucepan and boiling it over high heat for five minutes. They did this outside with two firemen in full gear. After 3 minutes and 45 seconds, the thing exploded and blew boiling water and grease 10 FEET in the air. The guy doing the report jumped back and started wiping his face where it splattered on him. The second time they did it, it exploded and then burst into flames!

Southern Living has pulled the magazine from shelves and has sent notification to two and half million subscribers.

I saw the online retraction of the recipe, but i did not know what the original recipe was, or why it was so dangerous.

I thought it might have had something to do with creating excessive airborne flour dust, which can be explosive.

Think about happens when you are frying or sauteeing something and an ingredient is added that is still wet. It explodes, right?

Why couldn't they have figured that out? Elementary, my dear Watson.
