Favorite movie scores?
I love and collect movie scores -- I think "Road to Chicago" on the Road to Perdition soundtrack is one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever heard.

John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, etc. -- modern-day Mozarts, if I may say so.

1. John Barry is my absolute favorite film composer.
"Out of Africa"

"Somewhere in Time"

"Chaplin"

"Frances"

And the magnificent score from "The Lion in Winter"

Barry is a genius. Beautiful, beautiful lush music.

44. I answered before reading, and your first choice was mine
but a different composer?

I think Ayub Ogada may have only contributed certain songs, maybe?

Scores are too hard for me! :dunce:

3. The Fly
It might sound funny, but recall the final minutes of the movie. I don't believe I've ever heard a track adding more to a movie than that. Very powerful.

One of my favorites! I also like the soundtracks to the Lord of the Rings movies, Stargate (the movie), and the 1938 version of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn.

Felinni's Amaracord, The Natural, Braveheart...Mrs. Sofal(sp?), The Times of Harvey Milk...so many good ones! What I hate is when they throw together a bunch of pop tunes and call that a soundtrack!

18. Howard Shore's FOTR is the best i ever heard
the themes presented in that film score dovetail so well with the visuals that together they produce an affect on the viewer/listener far above each factor alone.

shore's score made the FOTR so much better in evoking the intent of the film director.

the other two score's of the trilogy are very good, but FOTR, with the themes of the shire, isenguard, and the fellowship made the film as good as it is, and in my mind, the best of the three.

btw: shore's score of FOTR is considered to be modern cinema's best.

In terms of well-used music, I reckon that Snatch and Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels make good use of existing toons.

29. Newman's "How The West Was Won" brilliantly uses traditional
American folk music to a stunning effect.

Also, the score of Zeffirelli's "Romeo and Juliet" touches me on a very basic level.

30. Miller's Crossing, also by Burwell
The main theme has been used so many times in coming attractions, commercials, etc since he composed it. It breaks my heart, moving from Celtic yearning to menace to absolution in three short minutes.

32. O Brother Where Art Thou?
It's adapted music, I know, but still...my top choice.

Also, the background score and adapted music for "Blood Simple" is like another cast member of that movie...ratchets up the tension like you wouldn't believe.

36. Conan the Barbarian
It is very, very, very rare to get a soundtrack that so perfectly matches, second by second, the action on the screen and is also a very listenable and serious piece of music. The Conan soundtrack is certainly the A-list of top ten, if not the top, of soundtracks that fit that bill.

Whether you like the movie, or even like the music, all objective thinking persons will realize thathis is a serious and incredbile soundtrack.

I can't get enough Prokofiev.

I recently saw a horror movie called "The Ring", which had a phenominal score! It was every bit as spine-tingling as the movie. The movie website says it was composed by Hans Zimmer, who has an impressive biography. http://www.ring-themovie.com/
