NYC to ban smoking in homes?! NOT an April Fool's joke!
Holy Crow!!

Somehow I've missed this, but the mayor wants to ban smoking in homes, unless one gets a "no worker entry" permit which means that you are alerting workers (plumbers, cable guy, etc.) and they have the right to refuse to enter and make you do your own work. The Firefighter association supports the ban on smoking in homes, as do some other groups.

I'm hearing this on WNYC (available at http://www.wnyc.org right now).

A councilwoman from the city just called into the show and said that she is going to offer legislation to ban smoking ENTIRELY in the city. One of her arguments is that people congregate on the sidewalks now to smoke (since they banned smoking in restaurants and bars). So, in essence, they tell smokers they have to go outside to smoke, and once they're outside, now they're telling the smokers that grouping on the sidewalk to smoke is problematic.

I am APPALLED at this!

12. I think this would have been news in more than one outlet.
Nothing about that in the Times or on NY1 this morning. It sounds like something Brian Lehrer would do!

2. now THAT is some crazy news
can you still smoke in your car?
I have never smokes cigs but I cannot imagine telling smokers
they cannot light up in their own house or outside.
That's like telling me I cannot drink in taverns.

4. That freaks me out
Smoking is harmful, but come on. Are they going to install smoke detectors in people's homes? What a bunch of crap.

Especially ironic after the EPA lied about the post 911 air quality danger.

5. And forgot to add, the Jehova's Witnesses also think it's a good idea

because THEY see other people's homes as their workplaces, and they think they should have a legal right to a smoke free environment.

No f-ing lie.

Unless WNYC is playing the whole world for a patsy (they had a call in from a guy in Dublin).

Sheesh.

And if WNYC *is* playing the world for a patsy, I've fallen for it hook line and sinker, but it seems serious as hell to me (especially given that Bloomberg is so anti-smoking).

7. Bloomberg is such an ass
I wouldn't put it past him.

I don't smoke, but that is crossing the line.

8. Hilarious caller calling in now!

Saying that we shouldn't be allowed to have locks on our doors, because the Jehovas Witnesses should have free access to homes and locking them out is discrimination.

Also said we put people in jail who snap their gum and squint when they read the paper on the subway, and that gum popping, squinting, smoking, etc., should all be labeled as felonies with minimum 3-5 year sentences.

9. That doesn't make sense
How will anyone know whether someone is smoking in their own home? Are they going to have smokers' police patrolling?
