2. Great choices there, and I like them all
But amongst all the great choices, Miles is still the best.

4. Miles
But Louis Armstrong is the father of them all.

Love Hubbard on Eric Dolphy's albums too.

8. I voted Chet Baker
because this guy turned me onto his music.

Nat lived in my old hometown and I was introduced to him through a relative. Sweet, funny and intelligent man.

9. um . . . 'scuse me . . . have you people ever LISTENED to . . .
Louis Armstrong??? . . . he did things with the trumpet that NO ONE -- not Miles, not Dizzy, not anybody . . . has EVER duplicated . . . and every one of them, in their time, acknowledged Louis as THE MASTER! . . . indeed, there is only one proper answer to this poll, and it ain't Miles (great as he was) . . .

I think people are voting listening preference
I fully acknowledge Louis as the father in my post. Everything you said is true. But I think we're voting for who we love to listen to, rather than strictly technical/compositional/influential reasons.

I love Louis, he is a giant. I enjoy the Hot Fives and Hot Sevens material, but when I want a go-to jazz trumpeter, I put on "Sketches of Spain" or "Nefertiti".

on the list. If he had lived a little longer, he may have been my top choice instead of Miles.

13. Since the question was "favorite", I chose Lee Morgan.
A case could be made for all of these guys. If the question was favorite "musical visionary" or course I would choose Miles. But as far as pure trumpet playing goes I'd have to go with Morgan or Clifford Brown, both of whom died way too young.

21. Louie, Diz, or Miles...? Wow, tough choice.
Edited on Thu Apr-01-04 04:46 PM by TahitiNut
I still gotta go with Louie. He's the only one who literally raised goosebumps and got me teared up. When I lived in Rottenchester (home of Eastman), I went to hear Dizzy every chance I got. Miles is more multi-talented. But Louie interprets the music in ways that go beyond ... so I gotta go with the Satch.

The rest are really good (Chet's VERY good and I love Freddie) but the top three are in a league of their own.

Maynard still tours regularly, with his concerts benefiting school music programs.

He's known for his amazing range, but I love his playing for his truly beautiful shaping of melodic lines.

a couple of time and the shows were great. He pulls a lot of young talent from music programs and schools. The thing I like is he allows them to solo. He likes to show case gifted musicians.

Miles is the best composer of the bunch, to be sure.

But I love Cherry's work with Ornette. And besides, he fathered Neneh Cherry (we'll forgive him Eagle Eye :scared:)

Closely followed by:

Miles
Chet Baker
Art Farmer

35. Where's Clark Terry?
His work with Oscar Peterson and the Pablo genre, complete with the "mumbles" singing routine was excellent and extremely listenable (a word?). I met him in 1988 and asked him about his playing at the famous 1956 Newport Jazz Festival - his eyes glazed over and with a huge smile he recounted the experience. Along with Jay McShann, the nicest guy in the Jazz world.

Also, check out Art Farmer's "Soul Eyes" CD.
