The mystery of the dead mice |
|
So, I keep finding a dead mouse next to my desk in the morning. (It's actually a number of different dead mice, not the same one over and over.) The fur looks matted, like the mouse was carried in a wet mouth. Aside from that, there's not a mark on it, so I suspect its neck was broken in one bite. My mittel spitz (He's two sizes up from a Pomeranian)tends to stand guard over the mouse, but then, he also stands guard over bones and other treats when he's not hungry.
I have three cats, two of whom are young enough to be mousers, but they don't hang in the office.
So the question is, who is leaving me mice: the dog or one of the cats?

1. That's a good question. My dog kills mice as well as my cat. If I find |
|
the dead mice outside on the deck I know it was the dog that did it. The cat always leaves hers on the dining room floor, just outside the kitchen door.

2. The mice in your house have entered into a suicide pact. |
|
They mess up their fur just to try to frame the cats.
I have often found this to be the case.

3. I'm going to put my bet on your mittel Spitz |

I caught a small roof rat in a Havahart trap and it lived in a cage in the back yard for a while. Our border collie loved her job of accompanying me to give the rat some oats and peanuts, but one day the rat escaped like a flash, and in that flash the dog grabbed it as it leapt off the table, gave it a shake and dropped it. By the time I zipped around to that side of the table the rat was on the ground, limp as a rag. C'est la mort.
