THIS is China

So tonight I went to my friend's bar and his cook, this Chinese kid who speaks no English and is from the countyr and pretty FUCKED in life because of all this is there. He's drunk cause he came in buzzed and said he wanted to hang out with us foreigners cause we're always there and he doesn't know any of us (Chinese are REALLY curious if you're not from China). So, my buddies said, "sure, come on have a beer!") So, the kid comes over and it's fine, we buy him drinks and things are good. Then, he gets too drunk and my friend (bar owner, remember) has to cut him off. So then he goes down the street to the next bar and gets into trouble and says that they hit him. My Bar-owner buddy knows there other bar's owner and says, "I'll go down there and talk to them" and the guy was trying to get us to go down there and beat up all these guys.

Naturally, my friend comes back and the story is that the kid came in had a beer, was disturbing people so they kicked his REALLY drunk ass out. He tripped on the step.. end of story. (no marks and we know the guy and he wouldn't have beaten the kid up anyway).

So my friend says "look, you're really drunk...just go get some sleep" and after he left my friend was saying maybe he should fire the guy and we all said, "Come on he's just a young kid drunk, just talk to him tomorrow" My friend agreed. So, he closes up and we go to the other bar for a drink and we're there 20 minutes and the cops and this kid show up.

Now, the other bar is run by a lawai (foreigner) too. And (luckily) there were some American Born Chinese guys there explaining to the cops the truth about what happened. And the whole time this kid is saying "Come on these foriegners don't respect us and they're all anti- chinese" and so forth. So, our OTHER bar owner friend still had to go to the police to explain shit and shut his bar and all this bullshit. Back home the police would have just said to the kid, "Look, you're a drunk idiot... go home."

My friend was not going to fire him until this shit. But because we're all foriegn the cops are prejudice and looking for money... what have you.

Man, this is China.

so, naturally they (the cops) are looking to get some.

We have a friend who is a cardiologist here in the states, but is from a smallish village near Beijing in China. Whenever she goes back home, the whole village lines up to see her because they think she's going to hand out money to them like it grows on trees here.

3. Sounds about right

When my husband and I went over to China to bring our daughter home, we kept getting pressed by the leader of the adoption group for money. "oh you Americans are rich - you are here adopting children and have money, so why don't you give me my tip now?". Finally we told him that we had been rich until we paid all the adoption fees and expenses required by China and now didn't have any money. We also got hit on to provide gifts to the orphanage director over and above what we had been told to bring. Oh well, we have a beautiful daughter.
