No, really...why didn't -anyone- tell me about Carl Hiaasen? |
|
I've been a while since I've read one of his (read "sick puppy" first, now about to finish "basket case"); I can't remember anyone discussing him and certainly, no one had recommended him to me, AFAIR.
This post is to correct that for anyone into humorous, pithy mystery/crime novels.

1. If you enjoy Hiaasen, you really must check out |
|
Tim Dorsey's stuff. More Hiaasen than Hiassen.

4. True that. It's like Hunter Thompson and Carl Hiaasen had a homicidal, schizophrenic son. n/t |

7. No no no no no no - CHARLES WILLEFORD. Dorsey is a one-trick wannabe |
|
Willeford, alas, is dead, but he is the granddaddy of the 'weird Florida' genre.

3. I think the first book of his I read |
|
was "Skin Tight" - I was laughing out loud for real when I read it.
And, boy was Demi Moore miscast in the movie of Striptease. That role required an actress with a light/comedic touch.

6. I have seen him referenced here in the lounge. |
|
I devour his books once I get my hands on them. I have read them all. I hope he will write a new book with the BP oil disaster as the ecological issue, as there usually is one in the story.
Anyway, enjoy his works! They are all a great read.

10. Carl Hiaasen, Elmore Leonard and Tony Hillerman. |
|
My go-to-guys for absolutely great reads. I know that Carl Hiaasen would prefer that I not go to Florida (too damn many greedy polluting carpetbaggers there already) but I keep fantasizing about sharing a tent in the Everglades with Skink.

I like Hillerman (I've read all his books), but he's pretty serious.
If you like Leonard, are you watching "Justified"?

23. Note to self: Watch "Justified"... |
|
I just checked, I think it's on tonight on FX. I will definitely give it a try.. Thanks! You're right about Hillerman being more serious. I love the world he describes and there's something comforting and very beautiful about it. I love Hiaasen because he tries to make me laugh and succeeds absolutely. I love Leonard because he NEVER shows any of the work. His people just live and breathe and think on the page by some kind of magic.

25. It is on tonight, and it's delightful. |

I don't know if you're a connoisseur of the male form, but if you are, our boy from Deadwood, Timothy Olyphant, is an extra special treat on top of the A+ writing. If you're not, it's just a damned good hour of television.
It was a little quirkier during the first episodes of the first season - much more Leonardesque, but it's still darkly funny. The rumor is that the writers wear a wristband "WWED?" (what would Elmore do)
Such a perceptive, dead-on observation about Leonard - he never shows his work. Even his "average" work like "Tishomingo Blues" is wonderful.

17. Seriously, where have you been. I always suggest Hiaasen. |
|
Love him because he is just so sick, but have already read everything twice. Sick Puppy was my first too. Then I went to the first book and just kept going. A few of the books didn't have Skink in them, and I was terribly disappointed in them. My favorite character.

18. I like Hiaasen. I have all his books |
|
Nice to own and reread when the mood strikes. Nothing deep that you have to think much about. I guess 'Lucky You' is my favorite and 'Sick Puppy' comes in second. Mostly they're all fun.
I'm glad to see the subject come up because of the recommendations from other DUers of other authors who may write in a similar vein.
