Grandpa bought my 6-year-old an iPod Touch!
All I have is an iPod Shuffle!

:wtf:

When's Mother's Day again?

My son had a very good report card while Grandpa was traveling.

1. my teen never puts his down- so limits on time are probably
advised. :D I joke that soon they will be surgically implanted like in the cyberpunk novels..

I have an Android myself. Husband has Iphone and Ipad for work. :hi: How's it going?

5. To grandpa's credit...
...He gave it to him with rules and then we all had a rules discussion before we set it up.

It's going.

:hi:

2. My best friend got her 9 year old an i-touch. Make sure only you know the password
If the wireless is setup, your kid could download a ton of games & stuff from the Apps store - but not all those games are free. My friend put a password on it right away and if her daughter wants to buy anything she has to show mom first and then mom puts in the password.

10. I think he's going to have to start clearing...
...his gifts with us before he just pops over.

My household runs on a very limited income, but we really do have everything we need. We are trying to raise a child who is not overly materialistic. We live in an income-diverse neighborhood. There is section 8 housing within 6 blocks, and $500,000 homes within 6 blocks. There are kids who have more and kids who have less and they all go to the same school, and I like that. I really want my son to have a balanced view of such things.

My husband's parents, however, live nearby and have always been the types who want the biggest boat and the the shiniest car and the the smallest cell phone and the most state-of-the-art home entertainment system, and they have the money for all that. My husband has two brothers who take advantage of that lifestyle. One of them has a daughter who is my son's age. Grandpa wants to spoil them equally.

I think an iPod Touch is a ridiculous gift for a 6-year-old. But my son is thrilled! He really loves it and he's already very savvy with it. It will be good for car trips. Sigh.

We just always buy technology when it's about 5 years out-of-date. In most cases, we inherit old technology when my husband's parents replace everything. We've never had state-of-the-art anything. And my first reaction was jealousy. The only reason I even have an iPod Shuffle is because I won it in a raffle. We spend our money on the mortgage, groceries, medical bills and after-school programs. We don't buy stuff like this.

God, I'm totally rambling. I'm torn between my covetous of shiny objects and my non-materialist values. This gadget has given me a kind of crisis of faith. LOL

I still want one for Mother's Day.

9. Confiscate it until he is old enough to appreciate it......
say 35 or 40!

But, as others have said password protect the features that access the internet, except maybe Weather.

Kindle has a free app and there are a number of classic/old books that are free to download.

11. Books! That's so cool.
We're going to password protect tonight.

He was so excited this morning. He told the bus driver when he got on the bus and made me promise to tell everyone at work. He has his own website and he figured out how to view it on his iPod already. (http://garrisonstation.weebly.com/) It is amazing how tech savvy our kids are going to be.
