Hey DUers in NY
Any places I should go see or visit when I'm in the state? I'll be in the NYC/Manhattan region.

10. I haven't been in the Cloisters since I was 12
I'd like to see them again, but not if I have to take my car there and/or go alone.

Advice from an New Yorker in exile for 31 years: take the subway and a group of friends.

2. A lot of places! Too many. What's your passion? that would narrow it down
Food? Chelsea Market (15th and Ninth Ave), Mario Batali's Otto for lunch or wine, Citarella, Zabar's (free samples), H&H bagels (ask for "whatever is hot"), John's Pizza (Village or Time Square), Ouest, 'Cesca, Petrossian (Prix fixe is $39)

Architecture ? Cast Iron district, Fifth Ave, Central Park West

Shopping ? Midtown, 34th street, Chinatown,

History ? got to Battery Park and walk up Broadway -- you get the history in chronological order with 911 spliced in to the beginning. Trinity Church, Federal Hall, Wall St.

Politics ? Union Square

6. The Skyscraper Museum
http://www.skyscraper.org/home.htm

From there it's a short walk to the Staten Island Ferry, a free trip through New York Harbor past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

7. The Met is great and if you look at a map of it in advance you can
see what you want to see pretty quickly (or you can spend hours just exploring. The Museum of Natural History is huge and easy to get to.

Tech places: Google HQ is right across from Chelsea market, not much to see but massive. Apple's Mecca store is in front of FAO Schwarz, across from the Plaza and the "Friends" fountain. J & R down by City Hall is great for gadget shopping and the upper south corner has a view of ground zero. The NASDAQ exchange has a fishbowl in Times Square.

A copy of Time Out is a good investment. Has listings by day and covers all the major categories. Handy for addresses and phone numbers as well as just being sort of the best menu of what's available at any given hour of the week.

I didn't have a lot of time to see museums (which will have to wait when I have a few days to actually indulge myself!) but there were some great recs there.

Good luck and have fun!

11. Go up the Statue of Liberty--lots of fun and a good workout to boot
My family was jealous that I got to climb inside the Statue of Liberty while they never got the chance. ;)
Warning: it gets hot in there, so you'll want to take off your jacket. But once you get to the crown, it's a freakin' amazing view! When I went up there, back in 1972, the torch was closed for repairs, so I never got to make the trip up there.
