1. I don't, because the older I get the more into de-cluttering I get, but
I do have a collection of those Breyer horse statues that survived from my childhood. Now I'm thinking, hmmm, what do I do with them?

The first one I got, as a birthday present, looks like this:

40. Those can be worth a lot of money
Every year in Lexington they have Breyerfest at the KY Horse Park. The hotel I used to manage was always the HQ hotel for the event. Those people are crazed collectors. The hotel always looks like an outlet mall.
Some of the horses sell for big coin as well as the horse stuff.

The right one can be worth a lot. I could not believe these folks, they are passionate about these plastic horses.

The hotel, 300 rooms or so, is full of these people, every door has for sale and stuff wanted.
Don't get ripped off. Good luck, R

13. It all started at an estate sale.....
I saw a set of these dishes in blue and yellow.

SHINY!!!

I loved them.

I thought, "I have nowhere to put them!"

My husband said "Get them".

I picked up a cup and said "I have nowhere to put them."

I dropped the cup.....

HAD to buy the set!

Got on the internets when I got home and saw all the
stuff that the Harker Pottery Co. made over the years
and was HOOKED.

The pastels are just one collection....

This is another pattern that I collect, from the 30's:

I put my everyday dishes in boxes in the basement and
went full-tilt harker.

Every plateful makes me smile...

Edited on Fri Mar-04-11 12:35 PM by grasswire
I collect vintage sheet music for the graphics -- have about 12,000 pieces. I collect books, and vintage linens (especially old cotton embroidered pillowcases, and bright printed tablecloths from the 30s-50s) and all kinds of paper ephemera. Green vases and serving dishes.

Oh, and cookbooks. I have hundreds of obscure vintage cookbooks.

I would collect some other things if I could afford them. Tintypes and photo albums.

As a seller, I've had some amazing paper items pass through my hands that I wanted to keep but couldn't afford to. Just amazing. One set was the correspondence of a family in Massachusetts in the late 1600s and 1700s. Wow. I ended up selling that to a museum. I've had the journals and sketches of an early woman archeological explorer in Palestine. And a book that belonged to Charles Wesley. And lots of other cool stuff.

At the time, I couldn't think of anything I wanted to collect, so she actually CHOSE what would

19. I inherited a house built in the 1880s.
Mom was a packrat, so was grandmother.
Oldest thing I have found here is a land grant from The Republic of Texas, signed by Anson Jones, last President of the Republic of Texas, dated 1845, just before Texas joined the union.

That's pretty damned old. Also found a newspaper referring to the "recent unpleasantness at Whitechapel".
I rack my brain - what is Whitechapel?

Dawns on me that that is the hood in London where Jack the Ripper was murdering prostitutes. So that's 1882.

I am trying to get rid of stuff. I took some of my depression glass to a store that sells it on eBay and takes one half the sale price as a commission. Sold 8 glasses, I think.

I have some RS Prussia porcelain (pre World War I) that is beautiful but I would like to sell it.

21. I also collect bookmarks, but only those from bookstores
My main collection is business cards from bookstores, but often times they print their information on bookmarks (instead of business cards in the traditional sense) so I started collecting them as well.

Do you have your bookmarks in any sort of display book or box? I've never really found a good way to organize them, so for now I just have them in a box.

Tim

PS I also collect autographed books.

To slow myself down a bit I'll take pictures with my latest acquisition before I'll allow myself to buy another. Most cameras I get for $5 or less. I'll spend $15 if it's a camera I always wanted.

If can't get film for a camera I'll rig something up so it can use 35mm or 120. I also have some 110 and 126 film in my freezer.

38. There are three things I consistently collect.
The first is shell jars from beaches I visit. I have one from Hawaii, one from Mexico, two from the Atlantic Coast of Florida, and one from the Gulf coast of Florida. I gather up some sand from the beach I collected shells from, then pile in all sorts of shells and other interesting bits (like coral) I fund on the beach. My jar from Mexico includes a couple cigar bands and a number of different beer bottle caps. :)

Another thing I collect is snow globes - but only from Las Vegas. It seems like such a perfect little analogy for the city itself - a contained bubble filled with colorful buildings, sparkling away while surrounded by reality. I have one from every trip I've taken to Vegas so far.

I also save all my ticket stubs from sporting events I go to. I have over 70 baseball tickets, along with a bunch of football, hockey, and baseball tickets as well. One day I'm going to make a book of all the baseball tickets and have little bits of information about the games themselves.

55. Popular Mechanics magazines from 1939-1942

I was cleaning out the garage of a brother who passed last month.

Found about 24 editions of Popular Mechanics magazines from before and during WWII. In good condition.

Wonder if they are worth anything ?

56. I wish I had the attention span to collect stuff. I wanted to collect tin toys
and bought one at the Brimfield Fair years ago - it was a really cool wind-up Alpine Ski toy, but they seemed to get popular and very expensive so I only have the one.

&t=Technofix%20Alpine%20Express

Not sure how to get the pic to show up.

Haha, I just found another image on ebay and I WAAAAYYYY overpaid for this thing. Oh well. I guess I really am not a collector, I bought it because I liked it but clearly got ripped off.

65. If I could afford it, I would collect fountain pens
Because when I journal, I won't use any other kind of pen. There are such beautiful pens out there, running from hundreds to thousands. I use a Waterman bottom-of-the-line at about $40.

I would also collect books, if I had a room dedicated as a library. As it is, I have no room for all my books!

and I refuse to even look at a beautiful kitten that needs a home . My problem is that all kittens are beautiful and that is how I got these three in the first place.

70. YEP. My problem, too.
I want to win the lottery so I can liberate every "non-adoptable" shelter cat in Maryland. I want to build a huge cat sanctuary, kinda like Best Friends in Utah, but just for cats.

that's a lotta poop-scooping to do. :)

But I have the same wish - win tons o' money, take care of all the creatures (I'd have a separate home for dogs, horses, etc...)

77. No. Don't have the collecting / thrifting 'gene', and really, really
do not like to have a lot of stuff around. My husband, on the other hand... But I think we'll be able to really reduce the clutter the next time we move (hopefully within a year). I used to collect books, but now ask myself before I buy anything if I really want it, or if I can enjoy it just as much checking it out from the library ...

I'm not a hard core minimalist, but I am not acquisitive; I only want some quality things (like my own home ... ) and my family. I like nice clothes, but even then -- there's only so much a person can wear ...

91. not obsessive but i collect political memorabilia, dust, kitchen
"stuff", little toys/gadgets that make pleasing/amusing sounds, and books.

mostly books. last time i was at the bookstore an employee tried hard to sell me a kindle/kindle equivalent. i asked her "if i stop buying actual books what am i going to decorate my home with?"

i'm not a hoarder, but if i was it would be piles of books they'd be digging me out from under!

94. rocks, pez dispensers, elongated pennies
Those are just my favorites off the top of my head but I've got other small collections of stuff from through the years as well.

rocks - I go to fields and collect my own geodes, quartz crystals, agates, etc. Also, I like to purchase some at Gem & Mineral shows.

Pez dispensers - I open them up and display them on a long flat wooden piece at my house. I've got probably 150 different ones.

elongated pennies - the best and cheapest souvineer from all the places I've traveled. Nowadays, they'll even have 4-8-12-16-20 different ones all at one place, which takes some of the fun out of it, but it's still fun. My favorite one, of course, is the one from the machine that use to be on the top of the World Trade Center. I got it in 1996.
