Poll question: Greatest Live Rock Album
Here are nine of my favorites in no particular order except for The Allman Brothers Band - At Fillmore East which I think slightly edges out The Who - Live At Leeds as the best live Rock album ever produced. The rest are all close thirds. :)

Only room for nine on the poll though, so let's hear what your favorites are.

7. Hard to pick a favorite. Depends on my mood. You listed some good ones.
I would add Neil Young's Live Rust, Pink Floyd's Animals (Live) which they play out of order from the studio version, but still kicks total ass, AC/DC Live (guilty pleasure), John Fogerty's Premonition CD,

and let's not forget Woodstock, Frampton Comes Alive (hey, you had to be there...another guilty pleasure), Deep Purple's Made in Japan, Joni Mitchell's Miles of Aisles, Lynnerd Skynnerd's 1976 King Biscuit Flower Hour performance in Cardiff, Wales...

I'm done.

10. 4-way tie (ironically, as you'll soon see) for me:
.
.
.
1. Lou Reed - Rock n Roll Animal
.
.
1. David Bowie - David Live
.
.
1. Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypsies
.
.
1. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - 4-Way Street
.
.
.
.
Honorable Mention for Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Live Bullet
.
.
Saw Seger live around 1972 in between "The Bob Seger System" and "The Silver Bullet Band" and
he SUCKED!!! It didn't help that he was the closer at the all-day Goose Creek Music Festival in
Michigan and he followed "The MC5" and Ted Nugent (post-Amboy Dukes and pre-Gonzo). They
were pure fucking jetstream molten lava rocket-propelled energy and he came on so mellow that
I bet 3/4 of those in attendance just got up and started the long journey home.

25. Bob Seger "Live Bullitt" and Little Feat "Waiting for Columbus"
Incredible albums capturing these artists at the peak of their careers.

Someone mentioned Zeppelin. "How the West Was Won" is good, but the best live compillation is the live DVD (called "DVD") with cuts from Earl's Court, Knebworth, MSG (The Song Remains the Same) and other venues.

A couple of cuts in London

For whatever reason, Little Feat was big in the DC area, as were their then-frequent backup singers, Bonnie Raitt and Emmylou Harris.

35. Split for #1 between Allmans & The Who
The 40th Anniversary Edition of "Leeds" is pretty damned awesome. My favorite moment on the whole album is at the 6:37 mark of "Magic Bus" where Townsend hits 5 fat, ominous "chords of doom," culminating in Daltrey's tortured "magic Buhhhhhhhhhhhhhuhhhuhhhhhhssssssssssss."

The difference, for me, is that the Who was always good for blowing up my stored reserves of male aggression. That's still true to this day. I love the Shepperton (final Moon sessions) version of "Baba O'Riley" that's on "The Kids Are Alright," the 1:50 mark, right after Daltrey sings "I don't need to be forgiven," and there's Townsend again with those CHORDS.

If I'm pissed off or agitated or anxious and I put on The Who, I blow out the aggression.

The Allman Brothers are a different band for a different mood. I am less likely to "actively listen" to the Fillmore album...I'll put it on of I'm doing something else. Like the Dead (or Miles Davis or John Coltrane), sometimes their music was / is about the song, sometimes it's about strapping yourself in for the ride, sometimes you get both.

But I need to be reasonably mellow or as much as I love them, I don't wanna hear them.

And the Humble Pie album? That is one snarling MoFo. I'd call it a close second, not third. "I Walk On Gilded Splinters" is inexplicably tight and precise...it masquerades as a sloppy blues jam but if you listen to the way they fit all of the pieces together, it's genius.

Actually, I have 2 more tied for first- "Rockin' the Filmore" - Humble Pie...

And "Five Guys Walk Into a Bar..." by The Faces with Rod Stewart and Ron Wood... Cheating, maybe because it is a multi CD collection...

ANY of these 3 are hot enough to set your hair on fire.

46. Not necessarily *the* best, but Neil Young - 'Live Rust' deserves a mention.
The second, "electric" half (formerly second LP) has only 7 songs, but every one of those is a definitive, near-flawless performance. "Tonight's the Night" title track as an encore just puts it over the top.

50. "Wheels of Fire" Cream
two disc album, one was live, one was studio.

Cream was revolutionary at the time, for doing long, extended improvisational jams. They were far more radical than most things that followed, including the rest of Eric Clapton's more conservative career.

Four songs live: Toad, Traintime, Crossroads, and Spoonful.

Crossroads is the single best live rock recording ever, IMHO.
