I had no idea that such a thing existed (Star Wars)
Edited on Sun Mar-06-11 09:48 PM by pokerfan

George Lucas himself has rarely commented on the special, or even acknowledged its existence. He is thought to hold a low opinion of it. For instance, Tom Burman, one of the costume designers for the holiday special, has said that Lucas once told him that he was very disappointed with the final product.

At one Australian fan convention, he reportedly said "If I had the time and a sledgehammer, I would track down every copy of that show and smash it." In an online chat with fans, he reportedly said: "The Holiday Special does not represent my vision for Star Wars." In an interview with Maxim in May 2002, Maxim asked the question, "Any plans for a Special Edition of the Holiday Special?" In response, Lucas said, "Right. That's one of those things that happened, and I just have to live with it."

1. Really? As often as we've discussed that here?
:P

I have tried to watch it several times and only get about halfway through before I just can't take it anymore. I could see it being used as a legitimate torture device.

4. Must have missed it

I'm not that big a Star Wars fan so I pass over a lot of those threads and apparently I was in college when this fantabulous special was released. (Didn't watch much TV in college.)

5. I've only seen it after the fact,
though I certainly could have seen it when it aired (our family loved "variety shows.") I'm glad I missed it then or I might have been scarred for life! }(

2. I was ten years old, and the biggest Star Wars fan on the planet when that aired.
Even so, I kept thinking to myself "This thing is a piece of shit!" I may not have actually thought that word. I was raised in a very square, strict (but liberal!) family.

I thought the Vegas lounge acts were absurd. I was disappointed that the Millennium Falcon's flight deck looked like it was constructed out of cardboard and Christmas tree lights. I fucking HATED that damned song they sang at the end. I was embarrassed by the whole thing.

Like just about everybody else who saw it, I think there is something good to be said about the animated sequence that introduced Boba Fett. And that's it. The rest of it was the worst kind of trash.

3. I don't know much about that movie.

But Lucas' vision for Star Wars was not what that movie was about. But he got well paid for it, so he shouldn't bitch.

If you want to know what it is about, it is about using old codes to bring down the shielding, and small fighters able to penetrate the shield of the death star, and many other things.

He doesn't really know what it was about. If he did, he would know the story was not his story in the first place.

Good work to have put out those first three movies. And his use of Bioshock for game release of next Star Wars game was a good idea. And I am glad he got the Voss into that story, even if the spelling traps many with label trap, that can't see past blockers. And a few 100 other things.

He probably doesn't even know the Wookies are big foot, or that many sith lord trained guards flipped to light side but still remember there training. Explained in the story of Raina, or Sharon Stone in The Quick and the Dead. And many other things.

And I should be nice to him, and he actually has been nice to me with comments, but it is a bit arrogant when story writers think they created things that have much more meaning then that. And he has been very well paid.

What I am saying is the copyright system is to long, and stories are far more then the parts of their construction, and I think the muse of such story should get some credit also, since nobody seems to recognize there contributions to such works.

Star Wars is an educational film for millions on topics of hope and better concepts, it is far more then any person could claim to own.

Although I can be arrogant also, so understand that.

And I am due beer and travel money, and many experiences.

Funny story, there are some that don't believe in the force, that think getting people not to fight is to pacifiy a population. I don't think Lucus is in that group, but there are some that think concepts without fighting or violence removes the weapons from people. But since they don't know the force, they don't know that the power of the light side is blocked by hate and anger, one of the reason why the dark side tries to create those emotions, also why they try to set up guilt or regret situations, to get despair to block an ability to link into justice and compassion.

So the story was really good, but many stories like that are for different reasons. Although when someone tries to teach passive resistance for reasons of no ability to resist, it actually helps people feel those better thoughts, how good always works for good.

Actually I know Lucas has had spiritual inspiration, but each person can decide where it comes from, that first movie he did, with the white rooms, and the controller people explains much of that, from a certain perspective.

13. I saw it on TV as a kid and thought it was dreck.
The cast ought to make that clear. Nothing against them individually--sounds like a decent episode of the Love Boat--but for a science fiction show?

It did introduce the character of Boba Fette.

15. With that all-star cast, how could it miss?
I believe I may have inadvertently seen it when it first aired. Thankfully, I was in college at the time, and it was the 1970s. I'll let you do the math as to why I don't remember for sure whether I saw this or not.
