Hillsboro High School student barred from senior prom after being caught smoking off school grounds is asking a court to overrule the decision.

Leona “Oni” Fitzpatrick, 18 and old enough to legally smoke, has asked for a court injunction so she can attend the dance Saturday night in this city of 1,563 people 40 miles north of Fargo.

A hearing is scheduled for Thursday before Judge Wade Webb in Fargo’s East Central District Court.

The Hillsboro School Board voted unanimously this month to ban Fitzpatrick from the prom after she was seen smoking off school grounds.

My boys, jr high, got suspended for fighting offcampus. The argument was, that the school is responsible until they get home. My question to the superintendent (yes, I pushed it that far) was how do they know WHEN the kids get home. No answer of course but, as I told him, he had all the power and I couldnt do anything about it.

The above case is ridiculous. We had a smoking area in my high school, and I wasnt even old enough. Sad turn of events.
