2. The ones I have had are more like filled donuts.

Dunno how authentic they are--I have been able to buy them at either Schnucks (a St Louis based grocery chain) or Meijer (Michigan based) here in Illinois. They are filled with a variety of yummy things like Raspberry jam, Apple, or a Bavarian Cream sort of thing... Powdered sugar exterior on some and an icing on others. They are a big favorite here in my household.
