Lent?
does anyone here give up anything for lent? Or I should say sacrifice something?

My co-worker is giving up chocolate and I thought (I didn't say out loud) that wasn't really much of a sacrifice.

what say you?

4. I did that about eight years ago.
My friend asked me to never do it again as I was a royal pain in the ass, complaining about it each and every day of the 40 days. But I may do it again for Lent and as a real sacrifice, not complain about it while I am doing it.

People still sacrifice things for religion?
You would've thought all of that drivel would've died out when people started thinking in terms of science and reason.

Huh.

11. AFAIC, religion and reason are not mutually exclusive
They can and should coexist if religion and reason are used properly and moderately; in other words, why not both? Why should we have to choose between religion and science/reason? All three serve the same purpose, but in different forms and contexts: properly applied, they serve to control our base, animal instincts.

Mature, adult faith and reason go hand in hand. Don't condemn all religion because of the actions of the evil, fanatical, very loud few who advocate prejudice, violence, hatred, and other forms of evil in the name of religion. Understandably, these people are enough to cause people, especially the

I don't blame the ignorant, misguided followers of religion abusers as much as the abusive cult leaders themselves. As for me, all things in this world can be properly used, misused, or abused, depending on those involved. Many people abuse religion to force blind obedience, but so do political parties, secret and not-so-secret societies, fraternities, sororities, etc. It's only the religions who seem to be the prime targets of hate because of the abuses.

13. Comparing religion to reason and science is like comparing Hitler to Mother Theresa.
It's just not right. Religion has nothing to do with reason. They're opposites. Religion is based on faith (ie the absence of proof/facts) whereas science is based on evidence/facts.

Don't compare the two.

18. I believe the classical...
"faith (ie the absence of proof/facts)"

I believe the classical (and relevant) definition of faith is merely trusting in those things of which we do not have full knowledge.

Much as I place my faith in other drivers every morning on the highway to obey (to a point) the laws and conduct of traffic.

21. The very definition of faith is believing in something without proof or facts.
Where did I go wrong in the definition?

I'm right. I don't put my faith in drivers on the highway. I trust they'll do no wrong.

Believing in something without full knowledge is quite different than believing in something with zero knowledge.

28. the majority of folks on the planet are religious
when will you guys figure out that reason isn't enough to abandon thousands of years of religious practice and faith.

Can't figure out why you insist on making an argument that the majority of people care nothing about, and then standing there amazed when most folks don't buy it - religion isn't about and has never been, about logic or reason.

10. I heard jokes about people giving up sex for Lent
Kinda hard if you're married and both spouses disagree.
On the other hand, I've heard of singles who've done this, including Yours Truly. That's how I became celibate the first time--with a lot of prayer for years prior--after I broke up with my college boyfriend 25 years ago.

9. I'm sacrificing sweets for Lent
Edited on Wed Mar-09-11 09:34 AM by meow2u3
I'm a sugar addict and a diabetic to boot (because of my sugar addiction). So, for me to go back on the right track, healthwise and spiritually, I decided to give up sugar, starting at Lent. Sweets are my biggest weakness and not only contributed to my weight gain, it caused my diabetes. I want to get off all these meds that keep me indoors during the summer (side effects of sunburn).

Speaking of giving up chocolate for Lent, it is a heck of a sacrifice if your co-worker's a chocoholic. I'm one, too. Many a Catholic have permanently broken bad habits by means of Lenten sacrifices, so don't knock it.

Edited on Thu Mar-10-11 02:01 AM by WildEyedLiberal
How utterly typical.

Edit: I would be willing to be a LARGE sum of money that a thread about a non-Christian religious practice, such as one titled "Chanukah?" or "Ramadan?", would not get the cadre of Smug Atheists (tm) falling all over themselves to point out how stupid and pointless religion is.
