For years I didn't own one and was happy not having it. I moved over here and missed things like hockey games and all that. So, my buddy hooked me up to his sling box (Basically, through the series of tubes, I can watch Canadian TV here in Beijing). So, I was all excited cause I could watch hockey and news and such. You know what? TV sucks. It really is lame. Everything that's on is garbage and I can't even watch the news now cause the quality of it has gone so far downhill. If there's no sporting event on I just leave it off. Seems to me there's a market gap to be filled.... put something good on.
At least if I just get local english satellite I can get nat-geo and stuff, but this stuff from home is absolutely horrific.

3. That's true for about 90%+ of stuff on TV |
|
But there is that small percentage of really quality stuff that makes it worthwhile.

4. I don't like a lot of network shows |
|
Save for Glee and the Good Wife, but there's some interesting stuff on other channels. I work second shift, so don't watch a lot of primetime stuff. Seems like I am better off.

6. Sturgeon's Law, plus Orsino's corollary. |

Ninety percent of everything is really crappy, and ninety percent of the remaining ten percent is still fairly crappy.
There's still a little great TV out there, but it takes some work to find it...and that takes more time than I usually have.

7. I've got to tell you, if you think Canadian tv sucks |
|
you really, really, really wouldn't like most American tv.
I live in the Detroit area, so I can get 3 Canadian stations -- CBC-9 Windsor, TV Ontario, and a CTV station from London (although the signal can be pretty weak at times, depending upon weather). CBC is far better overall than any of the American networks -- at least they try to have content with some redeeming value, not just sex and violence. Since I'm not a sports fan, I do think they devote far too much time to hockey and other sports, but it seems to be what the viewers want. CBC news definitely blows any of our networks news organizations away. I'm a big fan of Rick Mercer, 22 Minutes, and Little Mosque on the Prairie I miss AirFarce.
