Can I get some patented Lounge-Vibes..........
Facing some tough circumstances:

Running out of money (In school and financial aid doesn't cover it, and family not in position to help).
Can't find even part-time work (although I have secured summer employment in June).
Can't make current month's rent or all my utility bills.
Car has problems starting (afraid its the starter - $$) and only limited public transit options.
Have very few valuable possessions to sell.
Have yet to hear if I made it into the Nursing BA program (laying groundwork for Associates' now).
Still have 2 months of school to go and I am concerned, due to my finances, that I may have to quit school.

Sorry to lay this heavy stuff on the Lounge, but I'm really scared right now. My life is on the verge of being where I want it to be, but the next few months of potential hardship has me really worried. I also realize there are folks out there who have it much worse than I, but I feel I'm standing at the edge of an abyss.

Any vibes/advice/anecdotes would be appreciated.

5. How much do you need to raise before the job kicks in, do you know?
I was in the same situation, more than once, before I broke through to the program I needed to get in.

9. Ideally I need to come up with about $2,000...........
I'm kinda stuck in a bad rent situation right now. But, once June rolls around and I get this new job rolling, the living situation is most definitely going to change to a cheaper alternative. I just have to get there.

Thanks for the concern.

11. This is a long shot but you might call local Catholic Charities.
If they can't help, maybe they have some ideas. There used to be some places where people could get help with their rent in emergencies. They're likely long gone but you never know. I'd give it shot.

6. this is really close to home for me
I wish I could do something to help everybody who needs it.:(

prioritize for the long term - keep fed and school things going, look for housing alternatives - can you couch surf for a couple months with somebody? Evictions take time but can damage credit - weigh the option of making landlord evict vs "lower" cost of staying while they do it.

search on-line or here on DU (we have an auto group) for advice on the car - might be something as easy as cleaning your battery terminals.

good luck! hope a part time thing comes through soon! (temp work? day work?)

7. Hang in there, CPB...

...vibes headed your way. I can understand the money worries...the last two years have been brutal and so far 2011 isn't a heck of a lot better.

Don't entertain thoughts of quitting school...I don't say that because I am being insensitive about your very real financial challenges, I'm saying it because I don't want you to quit.

I've not led a glamorous life for the last two years. Time and time again I've had to swallow my pride and put on my smiling face and be the wind at my own back.

In the past two years, during some lean, mean, and frightening financial times, I've had many people encourage me to give up my business and go back to cubicle world. I haven't done that. I don't intend to do that. It would kill me, and my first obligation in life...the only way I can possibly be of service to others...is to do what is right for me.

You have the same obligation. You are working toward the Nursing BA program...being of service to others. Just stand firm on that, hold on tight to that goal as the one that is right for you, let the vibes do their job, and just keep working hard at yours.

You are not at edge of an abyss.

You are on the verge of the success you deserve, because you have worked so hard for it. Be concerned about your situation but don;t allow yourself to be discouraged by it. It's not easy. But if you've been studying nursing, you're already the kind of person who doesn't look for "easy." I couldn't do it. I respect and admire the dedication it took for you to choose that path. Stay on it.

No one can make this decision for you...only you can decide that you'll see this through and make it happen, even though today, it may seem overwhelming or impossible.

Do it because you can.

Do it because you must.

10. Thanks for the inspiring words AV............
I'm trying to stay positive and duck despair. I, like you, have had a "tough slog" of it the past two years and I'm getting a wee bit battle-weary. My heart wants me to stay in school and my brain knows its right, but the doings of it over the next few months have me confounded.

12. I know this is going to sound like pop psychology, but...
...I've found it to be true, over and over again, both in my life and in the lives of my friends, that once we make the commitment...a real one, not a wavering one or one clouded by fear and doubt, but one that says "I am going to do this" with conviction, the "doings of it over the next few months" tend to fall into place. I don't know how, I don't know why, they just do.

There is a famous book by Dorothea Brande, written in 1936, called "Wake Up And Live." You can read the whole thing online here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/4710154/Dorothea-Brande-Wake-Up-and-Live

...she was famous for making one statement in the book that has been quoted over and over and over again, "Act as if it were impossible to fail."

So if your heart wants to stay in school and your brain knows it's right, do exactly that. Become single-minded. Tell yourself that you are going to do it, that you must, and while it may not be a 100% smooth and easy ride for you, things will fall into place when they need to.

I've had a lot of things in my life resolve themselves at 11:59 PM (metaphorically speaking). It's always too early to quit and give up. Keep doing what you're doing and new ideas will come to you.

8. Vibes galore
I was in the same place my senior year of college. I confided my money troubles to my academic advisor. Then, out of the blue, I was awarded a $500 grant by my department. Then my professors started tipping me off to odd weekend jobs where i could pick up an extra $30-$50 doing yard work, helping people move, etc.

If you keep your problems to yourself, they become overwhelming. People are always willing to help if they know you need a hand.
