going to post and crash, but felt like sharing
I just got back from running down to turn a pump off (the well is about 5 miles away) and on the way down there, in the middle of nowhere, although sort of close to the interstate (within a 1/4 mile) I came across 2 dogs just sitting on the side of the dirt road. Both middle-aged in pretty good shape but city-fat to my eyes. One is a red-yellow lab cross and the other is a german shepherd. The lab came right to me - he is a sweet old guy, and the shepherd was a little shy and more trouble to get into the truck (thanks Lupe! SO helpful :eyes: )

Of course there is no place to take them this time of night and I had to bring them home. I REALLY REALLY hope they are lost but I don't think these two are really the wandering types, judging by their physiques and the fact that I had to shove them in the truck. Nor are they showing any sign of jumping the yard wall (that Lupe doesn't even notice when she wants to come and go)

They drank two buckets of water and seemed so grateful (lay down at my feet right away), asking politely for some head-pats but behaving very well.

You know if you don't want your dogs anymore or you can't afford to care for them, there are more options than dumping them off in the middle of nowhere miles from any water. Even a bullet is better than dying of thirst.

I'm not an animal rights type by any means, but that kind of assholish cowardice REALLY pisses me off.

1. My dear Kali...
Those dogs are damn lucky you found them!

I hope you can find them good homes, or their owners...not that they deserve their dogs back!

Have a good sleep!

2. Thank you, Kali, for doing what you did. You could do no less.
I know I couldn't, and I share your sentiment.

A bullet to the head is an awful thought, but I do know where you're coming from, having lived in Death Valley.

5. So glad you were there to help them...
Hopefully they wandered off from their people and were not abandoned.

6. Happy ending!
Bubba and Trixie have been reunited with their very worried Mom.

They had been missing since Wednesday afternoon and were 3 or 4 miles from home. Animal control put me in touch with the local pound/shelter who had taken a report that day. I e-mailed their pix and they hooked me up with the owner. She was so happy to get them back, figured one of the neighbors may have shot them (and I can't really blame anybody for doing that if they harass or kill livestock) but these two didn't really seem that energetic. Maybe Trixie the shepherd as she did show "interest" in Freddy the cat, but Bubba is SUCH a Bubba!

10. Now I worry that maybe a nasty neighbor kidnapped them
and dumped them where you found them, since your description of their behavior suggests they would not be likely to run away.

11. Thanks for this story, Kali.
You did good. I like the "asking politely for head pats" description. Bless them and bless you.
