okay, i may be behind the times a litte |
|
but what, exactly, is facebook?
i see a lot of references to it here.
sorry for the stupid question, but i only use my computer for emailing, looking up cooking recipes, and posting on a few message boards.

5. it's kind of like a message board |
|
only more invasive and intrusive
there are some good things about it (like any tool) - for example the events in the middle east and elsewhere, but for the most part it seems to be a huge wast of time for most people, and can be used for nasty cruel behaviors that hurt people.

some use names that seem fake but aren't - be careful posting any info here about anybody there, you can get in big trouble, even though it may be public info there and freely available for anybody to look at. It is considered to be a privacy issue here.

10. thanks for the advice |
|
but i can't see myself joining it. i'm kinda paranoid about the internet, probably too much so. if i want to talk to someone about personal things, i just call them or email them.

6. I'm thinking maybe it's one of those things some woman keep in their pocket books. |
|
One of those leather notebook things that open up and have mirrors inside?

11. It allows you to renew connections, become offended about something the new connection said or did, |
|
then block the new connections and post in the Lounge about the experience.

13. I'm a Facebook addict, so I will tell you: don't join unless you're absolutely sure |
|
it will do you some good.
I've gotten reconnected with high school classmates, old Army buddies, and friends in distant lands through Facebook. I'm on the site for probably an hour total every day.
The social aspect of the site can be very beneficial. I have an old friend who moved across the country, got married and had a family, then lost his job. He moved back here without his wife and kids to look for work. He posted a message about how lonely he was without them. So I invited him to join a bunch of us at a favorite happy hour gathering place. I bought him a few drinks, and we showed him a good time. I felt good that I was able to help him out, and glad that Facebook had helped us to comunicate.
But I will admit, there can be intrusions into your privacy if you're not careful with your personal info. And two or three times a year, I get 'friended' by random strangers who seem to "collect friends". You click on their profile and they have, like, 4,000 'friends', or something. It's annoying.
So be careful...

15. another positive experience here |
|
It keeps me in contact with family and friends from out of state, has reunited me with friends that were "lost". I don't "friend" people I don't know, and I don't post stuff that could get me in trouble with an employer. I have also gotten to know a couple of DU'ers on a more personal basis than just posting on here. :hi:
