Function not data. Is how you understand a metaphor. |

Look at the verbs not the nouns.
That is how metaphors work. They use a function on some data set. A metaphor is using the same function as something else, but a different data set.
If you want to learn how a metaphor works, it is function not data. Most literalist look at the data in a metaphor, not the function.
Most Orwellians try to reverse the data in a function for a bad outcome to a function meant for a good outcome.

A metaphor is tighter, an equivalency rather than a resemblance. "The moon's the North Wind's cookie" vs "The moon's like the North Wind's cookie." Taken, btw, from one of my favorite children's poetry books.
