6. beer can is kind of nasty but it works in a pinch

dent the side down towards the bottom and punch a couple holes with an ice pick or small nail = that is about it. Place your combustibles over the holes and inhale through the original opening - did I forget to mention drinking the beer first? - yeah you need to have the can empty.

7. Any old pipe will do

Corncobs smoke cool. Try a thrift shop. Put some foil over the bowl, make a depression with a finger tip and poke holes in the foil with a pin.

8. Why not just go to Capitol Hemp?

I know it means having to make a trip into DC (barely, it's in Adams Morgan.) but it is one of the best head shops in the country and it's owned and run by good solid liberals who support environmental, animal causes and have been on the front of the DC statehood initiative for years. Also they have a kickass truck that runs on frygrease.

Yes, they sell what you're looking for and a lot more. It's the sort of place where you aren't going to get funny looks if you run into an acquaintance as they sell a lot of veg/ stuff and hemp gear (clothing mostly, some other stuff like purses and assorted hemp/veg-based plastic goods.) and I see Cap. Hill staffers and housewives there frequently. (I work down the block.)

Edit: Also, the cops don't care. It's AdMo, people smoke pot on the streets and the cops say nothing. I don't even think they try to raid the place. Just mkae sure you ask to see the glass tobacco pipes, they keep them in the back room but the staff isn't allowed to sell them to you if they think (wink nudge) you going to use it for other pharmacological goods.

anything about head-shops, but a number of local tobacco shops (the kind that sell a range of bagged rolling-tobacco) here sell a variety of pipes and accessories (like screens).

You can buy a little corncob (tobacco) pipe for like five dollars and (usable, but at roughly dime-size, smallish for a corncob; bigger would be better, say, nickel size) screens (these help keep tobacco out of the stem) for like a dollar

You might also want some pipe-cleaners and a smallish knife (or suchlike) to clean tobacco grunge out of the bowl.

In high school, I had bought a machine (it was a huge seller at the time,

You've started me down Memory Lane. Back in the 80's I bought a WWI replica
lighter from Brookstone (seem to remember paying about $20, which is how
much the antique dealer site is selling the authentic one below for). I don't
know about the original, but the replica didn't light TOO many cigarettes,
as it was hollow inside (the lighter fluid "tank" only running down about
1/2 to 1/3 of the body. The compartment was PERFECT for a coupla small
pinjoints or small, um... packages of other, um... FUNdamentals.

here in 1981 -- and probably long before that. I lived in Pennsylvania, where
they were non-existent. Whenever I visited my folks here, at least ONE trip to
one of them was planned and budgeted (orders from friends, also).

So Mrs. V. suggested it as a way to unwind.
