Poll question: What was the Last "Great" Western movie ever made?
Edited on Sat Mar-19-11 07:03 PM by Moondog
I just finished watching "Tombstone" (1993). It gets better every time I see it, and I don't generally like westerns as a genre. At all. Val Kilmer and Michael Biehn steal the show, even though this was probably Kurt Russel's best role. I think that it was the best western ever made.

It's all in the way the story is told. The book was great, the JW vehicle, no. This one really captures the book - and the reality of life itself back then.

Duck, the Great Western engine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Western_Railway

The Great Western Railway (GWR) was a British railway company that linked London with the south-west and west of England and most of Wales. It was founded in 1833, received its enabling Act of Parliament in 1835 and ran its first trains in 1838. It was engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who chose a broad gauge of 7 ft 0 1⁄4 in (2,140 mm) but, from 1854, a series of amalgamations saw it also operate 4 ft 8 1⁄2 in (1,435 mm) standard-gauge trains; the last broad-gauge services were operated in 1892. The GWR was the only company to keep its identity through the Railways Act 1921, which amalgamated it with the remaining independent railways within its territory, and it was finally wound up at the end of 1947 when it was nationalised and became the Western Region of British Railways.

24. I think this is his best role.
I don't always like him. Scratch that, I always like him, but I think some of his movies are terrible.

Top 5 favorite Depp Roles:

1. Dead Man, William Blake
2. What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Gilbert Grape
3. Ed Wood, Ed Wood
4. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Raoul Duke
5. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Willy Wonka - LOL, I actually mean it. I really love him in this.

I was so disappointed with The Libertine. And I hated Sweeny Todd. I think he's great in those damn pirate movies, but I hate those damn pirate movies.

In Arizona in the late 1800's, infamous outlaw Ben Wade (Crowe) and his vicious gang of thieves and murderers have plagued the Southern Railroad. When Wade is captured, Civil War veteran Dan Evans (Bale), struggling to survive on his drought-plagued ranch, volunteers to deliver him alive to the "3:10 to Yuma", a train that will take the killer to trial. On the trail, Evans and Wade, each from very different worlds, begin to earn each other's respect. But with Wade's outfit on their trail – and dangers at every turn – the mission soon becomes a violent, impossible journey toward each man's destiny.

Great cast (Ray Winstone, John Hurt, Guy Pierce), great script by Nick Cave (he also does the soundtrack with Warren Ellis), and it's really well made. Like Unforgiven, it's more a thinking person's Western.

And I note that neither movie I've posted is actually set in the American West. This one is set in the Australian Outback and The Good, The Bad, The Weird is set in 1940's Manchuria. Oh well, they're both true Westerns. :)

in general, but I liked Silverado, and can't forget Unforgiven at the same time.

Personally, and I know most people are not fans of it, one of my favorites is Paint Your Wagon. Yes, all 3 of the main cast get to sing, but there not really as bad as people think.

Oh, and Blazing Saddles. In my top 5 favorite movies of all time. I think I saw it about 20 times when it first came out. I got to know the dialogue pretty damn well.

72. If 3:10 to Yuma wasn't made, it would have been Silverado.

74. Probably Unforgiven
I haven't seen "True Git" or "3:10 to Yuma" so I'm not sure if I've seen a great Western since Unforgiven came out.

I'd like to nominate a video game though, Red Dead Redemption. If not, then Unforgiven.
