Anybody else lucky enough to have neighbors that are like family?
My fiance and I are in our mid to late 40s. My neighbors are retired.....I guess in their 70s.

Anyway, the wife just told me yesterday that she thinks of us as family and my heart was warmed.

Sometimes good things happen, ya know? We take care of eachothers' homes when we go on vacation, they give us citrus, we watch out for the husband, who has had some health issues.

Again, I babble, but feel lucky. :-)

1. You are lucky.
We have never had neighbors who we felt close to. I have lived in my current locale for 26 years and don't even "know" the neighbors except to say "hello" if I happen to see them outdoors. If I ran into them at the mall, I would not recognize them.

When I was growing up, all the neighbors watched out for each other and their children too. Times have changed.

2. I have great neighbors
Haven't lived here long but they look out for us and visa versa. One neighbor is mid-70's and a month after we moved in we got 12" of snow. He was up at 6:30am, plowing our driveway for us!

3. My neighbor across the street is 92 yrs. old.....
I'm 56 and we have known each other for 39 years. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Henry and I have done some serious beer drinking over the years.

The couple are around our daughter's age.
Late 30s.
Her mother died when she was a child, so Miz t. is sort of a 'mom' to her, and it follows that we are 'grandparents in residence' for the two little girls (9 and 5).

We also keep their two yippy yappy dogs when they're away.
I don't like yippy yappys, but what-the-hell.
:eyes:
Penny is a purported 'Mini pin' who looks more,, and behaves like a long legged chihuahua. Chloe is supposed to be a 'toy dachshund' but she looks a lot more like Piglet from Winnie the Pooh.

They're a nice couple and we can borrow a cup of sugar or can of beans or whatever from each other.
It's all good, I guess.

On edit: I should say I'm rapidly approaching 70 and Miz t. is "a woman of a certain age", according to her.
:-)

7. Yeah, it can be a mix.
I do have a set of neighbors who, I think I've posted about before, run a freaking gym outta their garage. Neither the HOA or city will do anything about it. And they did have the cops come over one night to have a talk to me. :-)

But, we have the retirees next door, the couple with the big, fat slobbery retrievers across the street and the couple with the teenager down a few doors.

As a child growing up, we knew EVERYONE.

Back to my point....it's nice having trustworthy neighbors in this day and age.....meaning, we each have eachothers' keys, pick up the mail, papers, etc.....leave money to pay the landscapers, give eachother rides, if necessary.....

hope we stay neighbors for a while.....

8. yes
neighbors to the west are like family - they are hard core flag waver repukes, but they are REAL people - good people. Do ANYTHING for you.

to the northwest - good people, but not family

to the northeast - good people in general, but not family for sure

to the east - utter assholes, hope they go broke SOON

to the south - a wildcat subdivision, suspect we provide a fair amount of supplemental income/meat to some of them

12. I thought that only happened on TV!
I agree, you are very lucky. I barely know a couple of neighbors to say hello to, and I don't even know what the rest of them look like, including the folks next door. These days a lot of houses have high fences so you can't even see your neighbors. When I was a kid, we knew most of our neighbors but I wouldn't say any were like family.

13. I like to keep to myself
Don't ever try to get to know my neighbors. Yes, I could be missing out on good friends but I'm also not bringing in unnecessary problems.
