Ever gone walking around in an old neighborhood in your town?
Edited on Sun Mar-20-11 06:39 PM by Brigid
I did that this afternoon. It's a neighborhood full of large brick nineteenth-century houses that once belonged to the more affluent of the day. Some have been rehabbed (some more tastefully than others); some have been cut up into apartments; others are quite shabby. Three standing right in a row have big red "condemned" signs on them. I suppose they'll be gone soon. One, now painted red, contains an apartment I used to live in; another contains an apartment where I used to baby-sit an autistic boy back during my college days. I don't know where he is now; last I knew, he and his mother moved to Houston around 1980. The Presbyterian church I used to attend looks to be in fairly good shape, but the synagogue down the street has a deserted air about it. It's kind of sad to see once grand old neighborhoods deteriorate. :(

1. It's just the opposite in my town.
People pay a premium for the old houses here. They're the old late 19th-early 20th century homes. All go for a minimum of $400K, although most run into the seven figure range. They originally belonged to very affluent people, and they still do. And, the neighborhoods where they're located are the "in" neighborhoods for the well-to-do. Every once in a while, you'll run across a run-down building. It eventually gets renovated and sold off for big bucks.
