Can you spare vibes or prayers for a young boy?
We just got word that one of my daughter's Jr High classmates was airlifted to a trauma center today with a head trauma along with internal thoracic injuries. He was on a four wheeler running a trail and he flipped it several times. The boy that was following him called for help and stayed with him until the medics got there. They are both 13/14 years old.

Cody, the boy who was injured, was riding without a helmet. If they had to airlift him it doesn't sound good, but I keep hoping that the airlift was due to the terrain and an inability to get to him any other way.

Please, if you can spare the vibes I'd appreciate it...

2. Vibes and prayers on the way for that young boy...
That sounds awful.

I'm hoping he'll be OK...

So young, and no helmet.

I'm so so sorry...

so hopefully it wasn't that

I hate those fucking ATVs. Hope he will be OK.

4. Prayers and memories
Last summer a 14 year old ran into a dump truck on his atv down the hill from us. He's okay, he made it. He had a helmet. I tell u what, the boy had just run thru my yard and I went out and yelled at him a little. But he said he would stop and it was okay. Then 20 minutes later we heard the helicopter, and can you believe I said something about hoping it wasn't one of them tearing around on the 4 wheelers? But it was a life lite, with him, and prayed for them when they flew off. I watched them fly away. He was badly hurt, and his helmet had been busted off. We were so glad he pulled through. One thing that will always bug me is that I didn't play mom for just a second and remind that kid to be careful. I sure wish I would have, that time.

So I'll try to pass along some luck especially.

5. Those 4 wheel things scare me to death.
I don't like them much for adults, but I sure don't get why parents buy them for kids--let alone let them ride without a helmet! I would never say that to the parents, however--they are neck deep in self recriminations and fear right now--they sure as heck don't need to hear my opinions.

Zach, the boy that called 911 and stayed with Cody until they came, called my daughter and was talking to her. He kept on saying "...there was so much blood..." It had her terribly upset until I reminded her how bad a scalp wound can bleed. Oddly enough, Zach had an accident with his own ATV just last fall, yet he still rides. He does wear a helmet now, so I guess somebody learned something along the way.

My daughter does to an extremely small school--there are 25 kids in her entire class. They have grown up together and they are all pretty tight knit. We lost one a few years ago when he was hit by a car driven by a drunk man. Tonight, after she got off the phone with Zach my daughter made the comment that it was just like when Brandon died--nobody was telling the kids what was going on. I told her that it is exactly like when Brandon died--we don't KNOW what is going on right now.

I finally got her to go to bed, but I have a feeling it is gonna be a long night...

Thanks for sharing your story 2gabby. I can tell you will understand it when I say, they are ALL our kids.

10. I completly agree with you
Edited on Mon Mar-21-11 07:28 AM by 2gabby
I really do agree, I'm a militant mom when it comes to helmets. The atvs and go-carts, kids get hurt all the time. Eleven years old, gosh breaks my heart. It sounds like it was a traumatic scene, just terrible.

I know I'm too judgmental, but letting them go without a helmet, its the most basic, backbone safety measure, you know? Some people. And I have to say, the family that almost lost their boy last summer, they promised him a new and better four wheeler. After he got out of the hospital. He cracked his skull and broke his back! I don't mean to be mean, I know it takes all kinds, but OH man, put the kid back on a atv? Some people learn the hard way, but I guess some people never learn.

Crossed fingers for the little guy Cody in your daughters class. He's probably done for the rest of the school year, prayers for a good recovery.

Edited to add the little guys name I left out

6. Air lift does not always mean severe trauma
A girl out here horseback riding fell and got a sharp blow to the abdomen. Rather than take a chance on serious internal injuries and bleeding, the ambulance EMTs called for an air lift. She was not seriously hurt at all.

Frankly in her case, I think it was a case of over caution since the ride from here to either of the hospitals is only ten to fifteen minutes. Getting the helicopter here, prepping her for the ride, and the return flight took about an hour. If she had been bleeding internally, she would have been in worse shape with that delay than if the ambulance crew had simply prepped her, loaded her up and hit the road.

Good vibes for your daughter's friend.

7. Both going out. Close to my heart (my family ride dirtbikes)
Seen too many accidents like that. Saw a dad on a quad the other day with what looked like a five or six year old on the seat in front of him and neither had helmets on. They were on private land (I saw them from the road) so no authority to force them to wear helmets. Another accident waiting to happen. :(

May your daughter's friend recover swiftly and fully.

11. The samething happened to my son
A few years ago my son and buddies went our four wheeling, he hit a rock and flew over the bike - he was in trauma for a few days. He has no recollection of the incident but he is healthy and has no problems today. He had no feeling in his body for a couple of days. But, this accident changed his life and I mean changed his life for the better. My prayers are being said.

I remember rushing to the hospital where he did not recognize me and could not talk and could not move. That was the most harrowing days with my son who is a risk taker.

 to you and the family.

19. Update on Cody--pretty bad concussion and lots of stitches--but he's gonna be ok!
Thank you, everyone, for your help and understanding! It sounds like Cody is gonna come out of this ok. Docs told his family it is a bad concussion and he has a bunch of surface cuts along with some neck injuries that they think will heal with time. It could have been a LOT worse, but thankfully, it wasn't. Lots of bruising, but he's gonna be all right! He's going home in a day or two with a headache, a bunch of facial bandages, and a neck brace.

Lounge vibes and prayers are a lifesaver!
