What does "improving blood volume" mean? A dog who was found
in a dumpster just about starved to death made it to a vets and they said his blood volume has improved.

What does this mean>

Red blood cell count?

Amount of blood?

1. I'm guessing, my dear KittyWampus...
But it's most likely a bit of both. Blood volume certainly refers to amount, and improved implies better than before.

I'm glad to hear he's in a better place, that much is certain!

2. Maybe severe dehydration or internal bleeding or bleeding from sores or abscesses.

I saw the pictures of that dog -- it will almost certainly have life-long problems due to
its abuse. I rescued a dog from abusers once and, although it wasn't NEAR as bad as
that poor dog... a passerby once threatened to call the SPCA almost six months after
I had gotten him because his ribs still showed some.

I had to show her pictures of the horrible shape he was in when I got him before she'd calm down.

3. I know what you mean
I have a greyhound and a whippet. Last month Animal Control was at my house twice in one week because new neighbors called them to report we had "abused and starving dogs". The first guy who came looked at the whippet and said "But that's a fat whippet." Then the greyhound walked out to the porch and his comment was "Oh, it's a greyhound.". Second time the visit went even quicker. The dogs met the guy (different one from the first visit) at the door. His comment "Oh, never mind.".

4. Possibly he was treated with a blood expander IV, such as saline solution
which is commonly used in severe trauma. blood loss and dehydration...evidently the dog is responding well to treatment, and I hope he makes it OK.
