Is this food or a knick-knack?

Someone gave it to me. It looks like it might be yummy, but I don't know what the two bottom layers are :D

1. It'd probably make good soup
The bottom layer looks like maybe polenta? I have no clue what the second from bottom layer is. Seasonings?

With my luck if I tried to use something like that for decor it would end up being a terrarium with little bugs and worms emerging from the beans!

Save it for a rainy day, it'll probably be really good.

21. The pinto and kidney beans are going to need at least ...
... three or four hours to cook. You would ordinarily pre-soak those.

23. Yea, I didn't eat it today
Kinda plan on admiring its beauty for a bit. When I do cook it, it will be a slow simmer for hours. I just hope the bottom layers aren't colored sand because I don't think I could put Humpty back together again ;)

22. It's better to soak the larger beans but not absolutely necessary.
I would keep it as a knick-knack until you are (a) hungry or (b) sick and tired of looking at it, and then dump it all in a crock pot and 3/4 way through the cooking add some chopped veggies, like onions / celery / garlic / green pepper maybe some carrot and / or kale / colard greens.

The mystery stuff at the bottom will probably be nice soup stock by then, and the green peas will be overcooked for the big beans to be cooked enough, but that won't be any big deal.

**or**

dump it all in a crock pot and everything soak in cold water for 2 to 5 hours first, then proceed as above.

And, tell us how you like it~~!

I think miso paste makes a great thing to add to soup and a LITTLE bit of vinegar and sugar or maple syrup or something sweet.

24. Oh yea... I'm sure I'll doctor it a bit
Good idea to soak in crock.. THEN cook it. Thanks!

:hi:

PS: I kinda hope the peas turn to mush. I'm not a fan of them. I considered using immersion blender on it if the peas are still crunching in my mouth. Pouring over good cheese, cubed in a bowl

32. LOL!
Yeah, I know. I've tried to eat them.......I just can't. The minute they hit my tongue, I start to gag.

My mother tried to force me -- a'la "Mommie Dearest" -- to eat lima beans. I was maybe 5 or 6 at the time, didn't like them and she decided the way to fix this was to make me sit -- literally for hours -- with a growing-colder-by-the-minute plate of lima beans in front of me (God, I can still see / smell them, sitting there all nasty and coated in congealed butter.......... :puke: ) until I eventually fell asleep at the table.

I have not been able to look a bean in the eye since.

33. oh hell!
Limas and kidneys are not edible beans! (to be fair, I have never had a dried lima cooked into a bean soup, but the frozen ones forced on children as a vegetable? :puke:)

there are some limitations! but a nice bowl of ranch beans with bacon or ham and some onions, cheese and salsa? heaven!
