Alton Brown on Gulf of Mexico seafood vs Asian imported:
He said the seafood produced from Gulf waters is far superior to most everything, especially seafood imported from China.

“Do you have any idea how they raise that stuff? I would no more eat out of a cat box than eat some of that stuff; there’s not much difference,” he said.

He's coming to Dauphin Island, AL for a gumbo cookoff.
:-)

"Farmers have coped with the toxic waters by mixing illegal veterinary drugs and pesticides into fish feed, which helps keep their stocks alive yet leaves poisonous and carcinogenic residues in seafood, posing health threats to consumers.

Environmental degradation, in other words, has become a food safety problem, and scientists say the long-term risks of consuming contaminated seafood could lead to higher rates of cancer and liver disease and other afflictions."

1. I hear you about the Chinese seafood, especially the crawfish
Edited on Thu Mar-24-11 05:23 PM by KamaAina
which, I am told, makes it abundantly clear why the critters are called "mudbugs". :puke:

But is something called "pilotsfor911truth" really a DU-worthy source? :tinfoilhat:

2. How about FDA 'Import Refusal' data?
According to FDA Import Refusal data and Import Alerts, the following, among other substances, have been found in imported fish from Vietnam and China: http://deltafarmpress.com/livestock/found-asian-seafood-imports

5. Excellent.
I wasn't doubting the veracity of the claim itself.

3. That first link
has what sounds like a good, easy recipe for gumbo. I will definitely be coming back to that one. Thanks!

4. Source of Captain D's shrimp?
"According to Captain D's website they get their seafood from around the world but they are currently not getting any from the gulf coast of the United States."

"Around the world"
China, Viet Nam, Thailand farm raised.

"The Food and Drug Administration imposed import restrictions Thursday on five types of Chinese-raised fish, saying many have been found to contain chemicals the U.S. doesn't allow in food for health reasons, including long-term cancer risks.

The products are farm-raised shrimp; catfish; eel; basa, which is similar to catfish; and dace, a relative of carp. The FDA may detain all shipments and won't allow them to be sold unless the importer proves to the FDA that they are safe, the agency said."

6. Dangit... not only must I compare prices
I gotta make sure it isn't from China or Vietnam... hmmm, seems like there are more countries in that area. I hope South American and American fish is ok. I'm on a mission to eat more fish.

8. I will rarely buy wild caught fish from China. But
I will not knowingly buy farm raised fish from China, and rarely from any other country including the USA.

Alas the days of being able to buy wild caught fish are probably soon to come to a financial end.

9. what's sad is that they (gulf coast shrimpers) can't sell it cheap
enough. which just fucking amazes me. you can't shrimp in LA, and ship it to all the restaurants in DC (who love gulf shrimp) cheaper
than it takes them to fish it and ship it from the orient. damn, why not get the same cheap ships to go around fl and up the coast.

10. Having been raised on Gulf shrimp I am totally prejudiced
but it's so much better tasting and plump and, unless they've poisoned hell out of it with oil, it's higher quality than anywhere else.

I won't touch tilapia and other Asian farmed fish.
