800,000 different genres of rock!
Okay, not quite that many. But check out this list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rock_genres (Also below)

What's the value of grouping and describing music with this level of categories and sub-categories? I'm not saying there is no value. But what is the value? Why do we do it? Who does it?

Remembering my teen years, I think part of it is a kind of tribal identity thing. Kids (who are usually going through some type of identity crisis) want to associate with emblems that define a certain set of values, even aesthetic values. I likes a lot of different types of music, which meant I had lots of different groups of friends. But they didn't mix. Part of their self definition was their opposition to each other. (Am I sounding too much like Random Thoughts?)

Them there is the music critic. I think in part, the motivation is the same, but then there's simply the aspect of developing language to help analyze and describe musical trends and how they have evolved from or relate to one another?

Then there's the musician. The musician is probably the least disinterested but the most uninterested in all of this. Or no?

Anyway, in addition to sharing any thoughts on why we have 800,000 different genres of rock and what that means, I invite you to pick out the ones from that list with which you most identify and the ones you think are the most ridiculous or that you've never even heard of.

7. LOL!
I stopped in and read your reply earlier while I was at work. It provided a much-needed laugh on a super frustrating day.

Thanks.

8. yay.
I'm always pleased when I can help induce laughter.

The various genres of music is why I didn't post in your other thread about post punk.

I read your choices, and thought, 'wait - those weren't punk bands? Huh. I'da thought they were.'

Okay, I can see PIL being post-punk, since they formed after Johnny Rotten's punk band. The others, I don't know their histories very well.

My first thoughts on "post-punk" was - Oh, new wave. :silly:

5. Choose a word, any word, and add rock to it.
Create your own genre of rock.

How about Tweet Rock, or FB Rock? Or DU Rock!
