1. Yes.
This is as good a time as any to share my recent vegan taqueria experience. That's right, vegan taqueria. "You might be in Berkeley if... the hole-in-the-wall taqueria down the street is vegan!"

At Flaco's ( http://flacos.com/ ), the tamales' fillings differ as well as the leaves: the tamal en hoja de maiz (corn) is soy- and gluten-free, with a bean-based filling, while the banana leaf variety (which we had, along with the taquitos) has veggie chicken*. The carnivores among us, present company included, were astounded!

2. being more of a Norteno I have to go with hojas de maiz
love the flavor the impart, but I would try banana leaves too! see them in stores in Tucson
