Does anybody remember SUNDAY morning cartoons?
Everybody over the age of about 35 remembers Saturday morning cartoons, in the dark, primitive years before the Cartoon Network. But does anybody remember cartoons that aired on Sunday mornings?

Looking back, it seemed that the cartoons were mostly also-rans; shows that weren't up to the snuff required for the antsy-kids-&-sugary-cereals time slots of Saturday mornings. I remember one show that was like kind of an animated 'The Waltons', with earnest, straightforward kids and a grandfather who was some kind of crazy Rube Goldberg-style inventor. There were others even less memorable.

I'm not including didactic Sunday School fare like Davey And Goliath, which was Claymation, anyway. No, just Sunday morning cartoons, a poor, sad reminder of the hours spent in front of the TV just the day before, taking in "The Bugs Bunny-Road Runner Show", "Scooby-Doo", and "The Krofft Super Show."

Anybody?

1. Davey And Goliath..."OH, DAAAAAAAVEEEEEEY..."
It was like the dog perpetually saw the kid as being a couple of slices shy of a loaf.

2. Even though it was an explicitly Christian-themed show, I saw a couple of episodes
on YouTube, and they were pretty progressive; Anti-racism, anti-hatred, love-thy-neighbor kind of stuff. That's pretty cool, if out of step with today's evangelical movement...

3. I still feel to this day that it was an honest, sincere attempt to teach kids solid values
It was explicitly Christian, yes...but the problem with most programs like that is that they stop right there, with the "preaching"...and there is little or no concern over making the message "universal."

The show put out a Christian message, to be sure, but its underpinnings were basic common sense and decency.

And you're right, it is absolutely out of step with today's evangelical movement...then again, so am I. I wish I had a nickel for every time a whacko fundie evangelical type made the headlines and I posted something on DU like "He's not speaking for all of us."

4. Gumby and Jonny Quest were on Sundays -
Along with Davy and Goliath, and some cheap-looking half-hour collection of woefully animated short storys and somgs that tried to look like Rocky and Bullwinkle, but failed miserably. Late Sunday afternoons, we got an hour of mainly Japanese animation - Speed Racer!

Seattle in the 1970s, Berkley in the 1960's...

5. We got Speed Racer on weekday afternoons, just before or just after
"The Hilarious House Of Frightenstein".
