How long does butternut squash keep in the fridge?
Last fall we were hanging out at someone's beach cottage in Delaware.

We left a 10 lb butternut squash in the fridge.

Will it still be edible when we go back this year?

Please advise.

1. My money's on no.
Squash gets damaged if you store it below 40 degrees. It's supposed to go in the root cellar with the potatoes. Can keep up to six months at 50-55 degrees in a dark place.

Sorry, but I think it's doomed. Only one way to know for sure though...

2. Did you read the fucking OP?
I was at a beach cottage.

There's no root cellar.

You dig down a couple feet and you hit water.

3. Zactly! Squash will keep in the fridge FOREVER!
But it won't be edible.
In fact, it will be toxic.
But you can sure as hell keep it there.
;-)

15. toxic? Really?
I did not know that. I bought some a few days ago and put it in the fridge with some other veggies I planned to use that night. But that didn't happen. This was to be my first experience doing anything with butternut squash myself; I didn't know leaving it there might make it toxic.

21. I'm afraid you misunderstand me.
In all probability, ANYTHING left in the fridge for a year will be toxic.
:-)

11. The metaphorical root cellar...
in the realm of the ideal but never-to-be-realized perfect root cellar conditions right next door to that thank you I know you're formulating for people who take the time and effort to answer your question... the one that hasn't quite materialized yet.

And geez... it's a huge mystery why people think the Lounge is an unpleasant place to hang out :puke:

8. Dear Mr. Taterhead, ...uh one moment.... Bwhahahahahahahahahaha
timeout to recover from Ptah's picture. NEVER seen mold that color.

Anyway, interwebs search says:

Place the squash on shelves or screens so air can circulate around them and store in a dry, dark, well-ventilated, cool place (50 to 55°F) place. Do not store uncooked winter squash in the refrigerator or in an area where the temperature may drop below 41°F. Below 40 degrees will cause chilling injury to the squash and alter flavor and texture. Stored properly, winter squash will keep 2 to 6 months depending on variety, at room temperature they should keep for at least 2 to 3 weeks. Check them on a regular basis, turning occasionally, and look for any signs of deterioration. Don't store squashes near onions, potatoes, apples or pears which give off ethylene gas and spoil the squash.

10. Squash is like a pumpkin. Fom my own experience, sometimes
pumpkins last for months if uncut and abandoned on the kitchen counter after Halloween. If in a fridge, it would depend on the fridge...., but 6-7 months may be wishful thinking.

16. Depends. Has the fridge been unplugged during the off season?
If not, what a waste of electricity.

19. William the fridge Perry could hold a butternut squash inside for about 3 days max.
Then the janitor would be called in.
